Chinese bramble Rubus tricolor botanical illustration completed for a fold-out identification guide, "Urban plants of Scotland" produced by Scotland branch of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, published by Field Studies Council, UK Cut to white botanical #sciart illustration showing the habit and species specific traits of this plant Some leaves show their pale undersides. the pale green stem is thick with glandular red hairs, and the orange-red fruit, very much like #blackberries, are also in evidence. I enjoyed doing the bumpy textured leaves, which are far more orbicular than other #Rubus family species
Hybrid #bluebell #Hyacinthoides x massartiana botanical illustration completed for a fold-out identification guide, "Urban plants of Scotland" produced by Scotland branch of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, published by Field Studies Council, UK Cut to white botanical #sciart illustration showing the habit and species specific traits of this plant The flowers are a pale blue in a flowering spike, with the stem flushed blue to the tip and the bracts also being blue. The basal leaves (only basal leaves as it all grows from a bulb, being a #monocot) are a healthy green and are linear, with darker tips especially where the leaves fold over on themselves.
#Thalecress #Arabidopsis thaliana, Hairy #bittercress #Cardamine hirsuta, and #Sherherdspurse #Capsella bursa-pastoris botanical illustrations completed for a fold-out identification guide, "Urban plants of Scotland" produced by Scotland branch of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, published by Field Studies Council, UK Cut to white botanical #sciart illustrations showing the habit and species specific traits of these similar plant species, with their white flowers, spindly stems, and #basalrosettes. It was good to finally get to illustrate all of them, and be able to clearly see their similarities and differences. #similarspecies #i.d. #wildflower #wildfloweridentification
Front page of the #BSBI and #FSC #foldout #wildflowerguide to #Scottish urban #wildflowers. Along with branding and the "Wild ID" name, it shows Wall rue, #Maidenhair, buddlejai (or #butterflybush), wall #bellflower, ivy-leaved #toadflax, wall lettuce, Polypody #fern, Yellow corydalis (all of which grown on walls and buildings and are thus labelled); then below these are the hybrid bluebell, Purple toadflax, Welsh poppy, Opium poppy, Chinese bramble, and Biting #stonecrop #sedum acre. These are labelled as #gardenescpes. I know I did the pictures, but it has to be said that as a sheet of weeds go, these are pretty darned pretty!

Grasses are one of my favourite #sciart subjects, so this was a dream job. Their variety and tiny flower details are a constant source of joy to me.
A drawing of a cactus and cactus flowers made with multiple different types of traditional media
Photo of the cactus taken near Joshua Tree.
Made this mixed media drawing of a cactus as a gift for my highschool art teacher. I based the image on a photo I took earlier this year from my vacation to Joshua Tree. I always enjoy drawing plants.🌵💖

#Sciart #watercolour botanical #illustration by Lizzie used to illustrate her blog on the Plantaginaceae wildflower family. This is the Buddleja. It's the flowering head, at a diagonal from bottom left to upper right. The flowering panicle is a froth of mauve flowers with orange eyes, and there are 2 lesser conical shaped infloresceces below the main one, One pair of leaves are illustrated, with damage from pests shown as holes ringed brown. The bottom left has another leaf shown in tonal pencil
#Sciart #watercolour botanical #illustration by Lizzie used to illustrate her blog on the Plantaginaceae wildflower family. This is the #foxglove #digitalis. It's one flower, taken from the flowering spike. You cna see the calyx at the top, then the magenta tube-like corolla. The mouth of the flower points downward, but you can see pale yellow stamens protruding and the distinctive dark purple splotches within the flower throat, ringed with white. There is a muted shine on the outside magenta tube and the corolla lips are undulate.
#Sciart #watercolour botanical #illustration by Lizzie used to illustrate her blog on the Plantaginaceae wildflower family. This is the Greater #plantain. Its based on the rosette of basal leaves, with two emergent flowering spikes, thin and green. The leaves are broad and have almost parallel veins (paler) running their length. The mid rib is also pale, and has thin green wings; this constitutes the petiole. the top of the infloresence shows greenish buds, half way down there's a froth of pale mauve stamens, and below you see the tiny flowers developing into seeds, still green on this spike. The other spike shows completed flowering and the developing fruits are tinged brown. At the bottom right corner is a close up of an individual flower showing mauve stamens, a bright yellow stigma, and 3 cream tiny petals. Cut to white.
#Sciart #watercolour botanical #illustration by Lizzie used to illustrate her blog on the Plantaginaceae wildflower family. This is the #loousewort. it used to be in the #scrophularaea family, which has now rolled into the plantian family. the illustration shows the deeply divided leaves, an off yellowish green, coming out from a central base. there's a long pale root at the bottom of the plant. Three of the upper branches bear flowers. these are mauve magenta. They are similar to mint flowers, having a hooded tube and basal wings. Calyx are swollen and tinged reddish. On the far right is a branch bearing three buds. The calyx teeth recurve, showing contrasting green inner edges.

Botanical illustration in watercolour, by lizzie harper, of Bermuda grass Cynodon dactylon in progress

Japanese rose Rosa rugosa #botanicalart #illustration in watercolour. Although this plant is an invasive, it's important to remember the plant is not "bad", just that we humans move species across the planet without considering the unguessable consequences that might result from this translocation.
For the last 24th day of #artadventcalendar here's #Japanese #rose #rosarugosa.
It's has become an #invasivespecies in the UK, albeit a beautiful one. Many of my #botanicalillustrations are non-native plants, it's vital to remember who introduced them. The plant is never at "fault", we are. #sciart
Knight Bishop variety of apple, botanical illustration watercolour by lizzie harper
For #artadventcalendar day 16 i thought we'd have an #apple. This variety is called Knight Bishop. I've painted #botanicalillustrations of several sorts this year, local to me in the borders between Wales and England. Learning apple anatomy and terminology has been fascinating. #sciart #🐡
