Rutgers Prep girls, back on top in Somerset County, are No. 1 team in Final Bellamy & Son Paving rankings Sure, the Rutgers Prep girls' basketball team won 20 games last year, but it still wasn't up to Mary Klinger's standards. The coach calls the regular season the "preseason." A division title is nice, but the county and state tournaments are the goals. Win those, and it's a good year for the Argonauts. In 2025, they won neither. But this year, with much of the same crew back, the Argonauts returned to their familiar spot as Somerset County Tournament champions, and finish the year No.

New Providence three-point barrage dooms Bound Brook; Pioneers take second straight CJ1 title in 57-42 win It's not every day New Providence hits 12 three-pointers in a game - even if they have hit at least ten on four separate occasions this year, including 13 in an early January game against Fair Lawn - but they have that potential. Saturday at home in the Central Jersey Group 1 final, they needed to hit against second-seed Bound Brook, and that's exactly what the top-seeded Pioneers did, en route to a 57-42 victory that claimed their second straight sectional title, and third in the last four seasons.

Bound Brook seeks first state title since 2020 run was cut short by COVID, as Crusaders travel to New Providence for Saturday morning CJ1 final The last time Bound Brook girls' basketball team won a sectional title - or was even in the finals - was in the 2019-20 basketball season. That season didn't end well, even though the Crusaders followed up their Central Jersey Group 1 title game win over neighboring Middlesex with a state semifinal win over Woodbury. The COVID pandemic was just starting in the U.S., but that game was played, even as college basketball was beginning to shut down.

NJSIAA announces site designations for public school basketball tourney State semifinals The NJSIAA has announced what sectional champions will play where next week, when the state high school basketball tournament moves to the group semifinal stage. Groups 2 and 4 will play state semifinals on Tuesday, with Groups 1 and 3 taking their turn on Wednesday. Winners move on to the state Group Finals at Rutgers University's Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, with Groups 2 and 4 playing on Saturday, and Groups 1 and 3 finishing up on Sunday.

Bound Brook girls roll past Dayton, 54-26, in Central Jersey Group 1 first round First round matchups with high seeds aren't always tight matchups. The 15th-seeded Dayton girls' basketball team is young, with a new coach, with Marissa Liberty promoted from her assistant post in the off-season, in her first year leading a program. And they play in a brutally tough division in the Union Conference with the likes of Linden and Elizbaeth. On the other side, second-seed Bound Brook is led by veteran coach Jen Derevjanik, who has a solid core and an uber-freshman in Peytan Pugh, an excellent scorer averaging 18.5 points per game, but also leading the state with over 200 steals.

Somerset County’s two 20-win teams to square off in Saturday’s SCT semifinals, as resurgent Bound Brook faces powerhouse Rutgers Prep By no stretch of the imagination did the Rutgers Prep and Bound Brook girls' basketball teams have "bad" years, or even so-so seasons, at least not by most people's standards. The Argonauts finished 20-7, while the Crusaders went 19-7. But Rutgers Prep didn't make the county finals for the first time in ten seasons, and they got beat by Gloucester Catholic in the Non-Public South B Final.

Finally, some movement in Bellamy & Son Paving Girls’ Top Ten, as Franklin joins the mix, Bernards and East Brunswick rise It couldn't go on like this forever. For three weeks, the Bellamy & Son Paving Girls' Basketball Top Ten essentially remained the same, but that's not the case this week. A number of top ten teams played each other, necessitating a shuffle, with a win by Franklin propelling them into the Top Ten and forcing a reset of sorts. The Warriors had beaten Hillsborough earlier in the season, but at the time, were just 5-4, albeit with two of those losses coming to Rutgers Prep and Gill St.

Another solid week (25-2) for Bellamy & Son Paving Girls’ Top Ten again leaves no changes in Week 7 rankings Maybe we're just that good at picking them? For the second week in a row, there was no change in the Bellamy & Son Paving Girls' Basketball Top Ten, with the combined records of last week's ranked squads 25-2. The only losses were by No. 6 East Brunswick to No. 4 Hillsborough, and No. 10 Woodbridge to unranked Montgomery. That means eight of the Top Ten teams went unbeaten in the week gone by.

After first win over rival Bound Brook in 20 years, Manville seeks season sweep at home Friday nite Hard to believe that two similar-size schools don't play each other every year in every sport, but that was the case for the past decade, as Manville and Bound Brook hadn't played each other in basketball for a decade. Maybe it had something to do with the Crusaders winning all 25 matchups between then from 2005 through 2015, by wide margins in the later years of that stretch.
