No. 4 Middlesex uses solid outing from Long, late offensive outburst to pick up 12-1 win, sweep season-opening series from Spotswood It was no secret how good the Middlesex baseball team could be this year, coming off a state Group 1 championship with a vast majority of the team coming back. With Cumiskey and Buchan gone, Spotswood leaning on senior trio and young prospects as Middlesex visits Losing a guy like ace pitcher Casey Cumiskey or Will Buchan, both of whom were among Spotswood's best hitters a season ago, is tough for any team. But they're not all the Chargers lost to graduation after the 2025 season. Six players with 40 ore more at bats are gone from the lineup, and only one - Leo Carone, who only had 14 at bats - hit over .300 on the year.

Coming off emotional Opening Day, Middlesex looks to return the favor, sweep Spotswood To so the Middlesex baseball program - or even the entire town - had a difficult, trying, emotional off-season would be a hideous understatement, and words probably can't even do it justice. The death of teammate James Matula in November in a car crash in upstate New York shocked the community, the school, and the baseball program to its core.

Dean of GMC Coaches, Steve Mate, claims 500th career victory as Spotswood wins at Dunellen Spotswood won by 18, Tyler VanLeeuwen scored 17, and the Chargers won their 14th game of the season Thursday. But the number that really mattered last night was 500. Spotswood head coach Steve Mate - in his 31st season there behind the bench, and 35th season of coaching overall - won his 500th game when they beat Dunellen, 66-48 at the Faber School.

It’s all chalk for girls’ basketball teams in GMC Tournament’s first round, as top eight seeds advance They may have been their first games in this year's GMC Tournament - as the teams with the double byes do - but all eight won their "First Round" games in the round of 16 Wednesday, with very few of them actually close. In fact, only 8th-seed Middlesex won by single digits, just edging out nine-seed Old Bridge at home, 36-35.

Spotswood pulls away in second half for 78-43 win over Highland Park behind VanLeeuwen’s 21 Last season, Spotswood head coach Steve Mate called newcomer Tyler VanLeeuwen a freshman sensation. "I see big things for him," said veteran head coach Steve Mate. His sophomore year? He's even better, and what's best is he knows there's still a lot of room for improvement. VanLeeuwen scored 21 points Tuesday night - ten above his average and five shy of a career high he just set Saturday against JFK - in a 78-43 road win over Highland Park in a GMC crossover game heard live on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

Big Central’s first off-season hire comes in Spotswood, where Andy Steinfeld is promoted to lead Chargers after one year as an assistant Andy Steinfeld played at East Brunswick for Marcus Borden, and coached there under him, then led the program now on his own. Last season was the first he spent with another program besides that of the Bears in three decades, working as an assistant under Chris Meagher, and alongside his son, Matt. Now, he's his son's boss. Andy Steinfeld was appointed as the tenth football coach in Spotswood history Tuesday night, when his hiring was approved by the Board of Education.

Spotswood, Highland Park renew old GMC Blue Division rivalry with Tuesday night crossover Just about everything about Tuesday night's Greater Middlesex Conference crossover meeting between Spotswood and Highland Park will have an old-school feel to it. The two are longtime GMC Blue Division rivals. You know, before teams started going in every different division, moving up or down based on their recent success. But they haven't played each other in four years. The Chargers are coached by Steve Mate, who's just seven wins away from 500 for his career, and his been at Spotswood for 31 of his 35 years as a head coach, the first four coming at Verona.

In split award, South Plainfield’s Dominic Massaro is CJSR Special Teams Returner of the Year, while Cooper Smoragiewicz of Summit’s clutch boots win him Kicker of the Year Sometimes, we just can't decide. Here we were, four members of the Central Jersey Sports Radio staff, gathered at a local watering hole to determine all our Player of the Year honorees, and we had an easier time picking appetizers. Defending Somerset County champ Gill St. Bernard’s leads Bellamy & Son Paving Girls’ Top Ten preseason rankings For the first time since Central Jersey Sports Radio's initial season of high school basketball coverage in the COVID-shortened 2021 campaign, there's someone else besides Rutgers Prep beginning the year at No. 1: Gill St. Bernard's. The Knights won the Somerset County Tournament in 2025, their first county title since 2014, which also was the last time Rutgers Prep missed the county final before last season, when they were knocked out in the semifinals by Hillsborough.

As Spotswood wraps third straight 8-2 season, head coach Chris Meagher steps down Less than 24 hours after the Spotswood football team finished off an 8-2 season - snubbed by the NJSIAA's UPR playoff formula in favor of 3-5 Camden Eastside on a strength of schedule tiebreaker - head coach Chris Meagher has stepped down. Meagher coached the Chargers for four seasons, and after a 1-8 campaign in his first, a rebuilding year, Spotswood never won fewer than seven games his next four seasons, going 7-3 in 2022, then 8-2 in 2023, last season, and this year.

Cutoff Weekend Friday Playoff Update – Group 2: Bernards edges up, but still no top-seed; Voorhees locks up bid, Dayton can play itself in, Spotswood will miss playoffs at 8-1 With Friday night's Cutoff Weekend high school football games all in the books, Central Jersey Sports Radio is updating the unofficial NJSIAA playoff standings as we head into Saturday action. We'll have further analysis late morning into the afternoon Saturday, with our 2025 "Playoff Projection Show" scheduled for 6 pm where we give our bracket projections.
