Most area baseball teams open this week, but a handful already have games under their belt, including a no hitter! Here’s a look as we head into the first full week of the 2026 season The season is officially underway in high school baseball, but there won't be a Week One Bellamy & Paving Top Ten this Monday. While most schools will open play this week - many of them on Monday and Tuesday - a handful already have taken to the diamond in 2026, including five GMC teams and two from Somerset County. With three D1 commits in the rotation, veteran Edison staff should help Eagles soar in 2026 Every year, graduation forces a number of high school baseball coaches to search for a new No. 1, or even a No. 2 or No. 3 pitcher. Or maybe even a great bullpen guy. That's one problem, on the whole, Edison baseball coach Vinny Abene won't have in 2026. The Eagles did not have a single senior take the mound last year, but they'll have three on the bump this season who will play for D1 schools when they're all done wearing red and gold.

Bridgewater-Raritan looks for bounceback year in 2026 with an experienced group, after major graduation, tough luck losses in 2025 Sometimes, the cyclical nature of public school high school sports is more powerful than any coaching or skill level can overcome. That was the case in 2025 for the Bridgewater-Raritan baseball team, which was dominant en route to winning the state Group 4 title the year prior with a veteran group that had played together for years. But so many key players graduated from that squad, and that - coupled with a ton of close losses - resulted in a 7-18 campaign in last season, after going 30-3 in 2024.

After thrilling GMC Tournament run, what can St. Joseph-Metuchen do for an encore? Plenty You could look all the way back to the mid-80s, and the formation of the Greater Middlesex Conference, but it would be impossible to find a more thrilling run to the GMC Tournament title than St. Joseph-Metuchen had in 2025. They were the five-seed, and won all four of their games in the tournament in their final at bat. Their lineup never faced a single pitch in the entire run while ahead in the game.

Ace starter Stieglitz is gone, but Ridge baseball has plenty back to be back in the thick of things again in 2026 Aidan Stieglitz is a special ballplayer. The starter dominated for Ridge last season, going 9-3 in 13 appearances with a 0.77 ERA and 99 strikeouts, and was named the Central Jersey Sports Radio Somerset County Player of the Year. You don't just replace a player like that. But there are enough returnees for the Red Devils that head coach Tom Blackwell is confident his team can be right back in the thick of things this season, even if last year fell just a little bit short.

A few shuffles in Greater Middlesex Conference baseball alignments for 2026; St. Thomas Aquinas moves up to Red Division Unlike basketball's one-year experiment with split divisions - Red American, Red National, for example - and six divisions overall, Greater Middlesex Conference baseball will retain the traditional four-division format for the upcoming 2026 season, but a few teams have moved around. The top-division stays mainly in tact, with South Brunswick - which went 4-20 last season but has brought GMC stalwart Lou Urbano in to take over the program as head coach - moving down to the GMC White, while St.

NJSIAA saying so long to Veterans Park for state baseball championships, heading to Rutgers, per report As George Carlin once said, when comparing baseball and football in a legendary bit, "Baseball is played in a park. The baseball park!" But starting this season, as first reported by P.J. Potter of NJ Advance Media, the NJSIAA is leaving the park - Veterans Park in Hamilton, specifically - and taking its state baseball championships up the Turnpike, off Exit 9, to the Livingston Campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, where Bainton Field will be the new home of the six non-public and public school title games played in June.

Happy 2026! A genie granted us three wishes. Will they come true for HS sports this year? Another year behind us. They seem to go faster and faster these days. Can anyone believe that Central Jersey Sports Radio will be finishing up its sixth season of covering high school sports this June when baseball packs it in? And we started this thing in the middle (July) of the pandemic? Pretty bold move, but then hey, there were limits on fans at football games, and basketball games didn't see fans beyond parents until later in that shortened season.

Geertsma, Roof look back at a remarkable baseball season at Governor Livingston: state champions, done to perfection Like any recipe, there can be a lot of ingredients. When they blend together well, the resulting meal can be delicious. And that's a good way to describe the 2024 baseball season for Governor Livingston. There were tense moments, some easy wins, injuries and other obstacles, but in the end, a mix of great players - starters and otherwise - along with excellent coaching saw them finish their 2024 season 28-0.

NJSIAA adds another tweak to power points, affecting all sports in 2025-26, except football More changes are coming to the state's power point system, under a change recently announced by the NJSIAA. According to an email sent to athletic directors and coaches across New Jersey that was obtained by Central Jersey Sports Radio, the NJSIAA made the changes based on two "areas of concern" it says emerged after seeking feedback from member schools: how out-of-state opponents factor into calculations, and whether all games should be averaged, or if instead a only the best results should count.

NFHS approves “double first base” for 2027 high school baseball season in effort to curtail injuries, interference calls; player meetings also addressed In a huge and wide-ranging rules change for high school baseball, the National Federation of State High School Associations - which makes rules for sports nationwide - has adopted the use of a double first base, which adds an extra base of the same size in foul territory, in an effort to cut down on injuries, and avoid interference calls.

Hillsborough’s Mosko, steering Raiders through mid-season rough patch to win program’s first sectional title in 13 years, is named 2025 CJSR Somerset County Coach of the Year Every team has its ups and downs in a season. Even those that finish that rare undefeated season don't do it without any difficulty. But it's how they bounce back and overcome adversity that defines a team. And in the case of the Hillsborough baseball team, they did that just this season, bouncing all the way to the Central Jersey Group 4 title.

Middlesex junior Dominic Long goes 12-0, with four state tourney wins, is named CJSR’s 2025 GMC Player of the Year Last year, it was Cory Rible, the Bridgewater-Raritan closer - whose team won all 17 games he appeared in - taking home Player of the Year honors from Central Jersey Sports Radio. Middlesex seniors Dom Parenti, Owen Reynolds on Blue Jays’ seventh Group 1 title, CJSR Team of the Year honors for state champs The Middlesex Blue Jays baseball program has won seven state titles in its history, all since 1990, and five of them have come since 2013. Only one team - Gloucester Catholic, with six - has won more in that span. There are a lot of reasons for that. Besides skilled players, there's great coaching, and a great community behind them.

Game Highlights! Catch all the key plays in the NJSIAA Group 1 state championship game between Middlesex and Midland Park The Middlesex Blue Jays won their seventh state title, hanging on to beat Midland Park 3-2 Monday afternoon at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex in Bergen County. Middlesex finishes its season 23-5, winners of the Central Jersey Group 1 title and the overall state Group 1 championship. The Blue Jays got three runs in the third inning on a two-RBI single by Luke Jones and an RBI infield hit by Marcus Lavornia.

Rain, rain go away! Middlesex and Midland Park will try again Monday. So how does this work? Despite everyone's best efforts, the Middlesex and Midland Park baseball teams just couldn't get in their Group 1 state title game down at Veterans' Park in Hamilton Saturday afternoon, due to light rain that turned heavy in the top of the first inning, leaving poor field conditions. The game was called in the middle of the first with no score, and will be resumed Monday at 1 pm with the Blue Jays coming up to bat in the bottom of the first.

GMC’s last team standing, Middlesex aims for league record 7th state title Saturday when Blue Jays take on red-hot Midland Park in Hamilton There has been nothing particularly spectacular this season about the Middlesex High School baseball team. And that's a compliment. There is no feared hitter batting over the .500 mark with eight home runs. There's no pitcher with 100 strikeouts and a blazing fastball who's going to a major Division 1 program. Just, good, solid, consistent baseball players. Baseball players who have won 16 of their last 17 games and are a win away from their seventh state championship.

Middlesex opponent Midland Park on historic state tourney run despite key injuries With a 15-4-1 record, having won four straight games and endured a mid-April rough patch, the Midland Park baseball team was looking to finish the regular season strong heading into the state tournament, until the opposite happened. The Panthers, who would enter the North 1, Group 1 playoffs as the two seed, lost four straight. There were two tight games - a 7-4 loss to Emerson Boro and a 6-4 loss at New Milford - then a 10-2 loss at Ridgewood in the Bergen County Invitational Final, and another regular season loss, 2-0, at Cresskill.

Hillsborough makes big jump in Week 10 Bellamy & Son Paving Top Ten as many teams shuffle after state tourney wins, losses While the top two teams remained the same, Hillsborough made a big jump from the ten spot last week to No. 3 as the Raiders stunned previous No. 6 and second-seed Old Bridge with ten unanswered runs to win the Central Jersey Group 4 championship back on Thursday. No. 1 still belongs to St. Joseph-Metuchen (16-7) - at least for now - even though the Falcons' season ended with a 6-4 loss at top-seed Christian Brothers Academy in the Non-Public South A semifinals last Wednesday.

Middlesex seeks return to state finals with solid, efficient pitching, balanced offense, as Schalick visits from deep South Jersey It's a good thing most high school baseball games start at 4:00. Maybe Schalick will avoid the worst of Central Jersey's rush-hour traffic and make it to Mountainview Park in under two hours. That would be a win in and of itself, but much more is on the line Monday afternoon when Middlesex and Schalick square off in the NJSIAA Group 2 semifinals, the winner going to Saturday's state championship game in Hamilton.

With state title in hand, Hillsborough still looking for more as Raiders host one last home game When the Hillsborough baseball team - the nine-seed in Central Jersey Group 4 - hosted 12-seed Montgomery last Tuesday in a sectional semifinal game, it was a surprise. Even if they'd made a run to the finals and won their first sectional title since 2012, the figured they'd be on the road the whole way. They played on the road in their next game, back on Thursday, and after falling behind 6-3 in the fourth, scored ten unanswered runs to beat second-seed Old Bridge 13-6, winning the title, their first in 13 years.
