Female Satin Bowerbirds are medium-sized, cryptically colored birds, predominantly olive-green on their backs with brownish wings and tails, and creamy underbodies marked with dark, scalloped, or crescent-shaped patterns. They are distinguished by their bright violet-blue eyes. Bowers are two-walled, twig-constructed 'avenues'.

Most of his plumage is blue-black, but he is flinging his wings up, revealing underparts which are still yellowish - characteristic of the younger male. He holds a blue bottle top in his beak. Satin Bowerbirds love blue things.

Architectural Seduction - bioGraphic In pursuit of mates, male bowerbirds construct and curate elaborate, whimsical bachelor pads.

"Bowerbirds, a family of species found in New Guinea and Australia, are named for the elaborate structures they create—'bowers', often made of sticks or grasses, that seem to have no evolutionary purpose except to attract a mate."

I’ve often wondered what kind of blue items bower birds used to collect before they had access to all our discarded blue plastic crap. Well last week, my daughter saw a bower in western Qld largely unaffected by human littering - interesting, and kind of refreshing…

#bowerbirds are the only birds that build structures used specifically for courtship. But why and how did this remarkable ability evolve?

We discuss some possibilities in our new review in Emu - Austral Ornithology!

#Bowers are incredible structures built by male #bowerbirds who weave grass & sticks together. To this the male adds decorations that will help him attract a mate: shell, fruits & leaves. Increasingly, however, natural decorations are being replaced with #plastic & this is bad news for bowerbirds…

Satin bowerbirds, found in eastern Australian rainforests and woodlands, exhibit striking sexual dimorphism. Males are glossy black with violet-blue eyes, while females are olive-brown. Males build elaborate "bowers" decorated with blue objects to attract females. They perform intricate courtship dances, showcasing their collected treasures. Females assess these bowers and displays before mating.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Bird of the Day: Satin Bowerbird
at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra. It takes 7 years before males get their adult plumage, like this one. They decorate the bower with blue things, but perhaps these dropped pink flowers will do? #birds #birdsofaustralia #australianbirds #bowerbirds

A not great photo taken surreptitiously over the dash of my car so as not to raise alarm. Looking at scrubby grass and a dirt road where three green bowerbirds are looking towards me suspiciously. One is quite fluffed up.

State distribution:

The photo shows a glossy black bird with plumage that shimmers with an almost metallic blue sheen. This iridescent effect is caused by the light diffracting off the surface texture of his feathers. It has a pale bluish-white bill and piercing violet-blue eyes.
