At my last big conference ( #CILIPconf24 - a while ago), I was asked what it was I was using to note-take & share from-lots of people weren’t aware of BlueSky as a Twitter alternative. It’s now more commonly known). Hope more people at #DARTS9 will also be on here. In any case, I will be posting :)
I wrote about 1 conference yesterday #ESIcon24. The other this year was #CILIPconf24. Being the 2nd year I attended this, I was able to interact with more confidence, & gained from many sessions. Also, while I enjoy presenting, it was a nice reprieve to just take things in #ResearchAdvent #Day4
I moved house recently and it was time for a good old weed, so I sent 26 boxes to Better World Books after meeting them at #cilipconf24. Boxes and courier collection are free with a minimum 6 boxes (1 box = ~1 linear metre).
I had a nice talk with a couple of the Better World people at #CILIPconf24 but didn’t go into donation (ought to read the follow up email…)

The Special Libraries Association conference started yesterday & is continuing till tomorrow. I’ve seen several posts on here & will be on the lookout for more. I’ve added #SLA2024 to the top of the list of Library conferences on BlueSky, as well a #CILIPconf24, which I was posting from last week.

I’ve already read three chapters this morning of Tammye Huf’s book A More Perfect Union. It is very good. #CILIPconf24 Tempted to sit reading it all day, but there’s lots of housework to do, having been away for two days, and people coming for the weekend to prepare for.
Conference 3 of 4 was a great opportunity to interact with practitioners & academics. It was inspiring to learn about the UK library landscape at #cilipconf24 & hear how they address challenges we share. Can’t wait to share these insights with my LIS students!
Today when I got home from #CILIPconf24 my children wanted goodies (as they always do when I come back from a conference). I love their negotiation over who gets what - even though we all that afterwards I’m going to put most of it away and bring it out gradually as I/we need it #GenuineJuly #Day11
I didn’t do my #GenuineJuly #Day10 yesterday (I did do many other posts…). I think it has to be the round of applause that went round the room when England equalised. The football was unobtrusive in the corner during the #CILIPconf24 gala dinner, but lots of us were keeping a little eye on it
- "Not enough time" is often a question of prioritisation: what do you want to give up to enable (what should be) another important part of your work? Ask permission for that.
- Librarians have the skills. Ask yourself, what would I advise a PGT student in this situation?

I interviewed with LIRG for this project and have some thoughts:
- Practitioner research is incredibly important alongside academic research as a contribution to our professional body of knowledge.
- Permission is often feasible if your manager also values theory and practice.

Example of a book that an academic had ordered that was classified along with books that confirmed a stereotype. Correct place in LOC Subject Headings. Discussion of alternative places, and issues with that. Alternative solutions. Buying more books. Value of the discussion #CILIPconf24
Amy: Making clear to people that it’s not about what you take off the shelves, about what you add to them (or not. It’s about everything that’s there). #CILIPconf24
Sara: we’re all making choices all day every day. The idea of the choice that wasn’t made (always there). The world that is structured by colonial epistemology. How you decide to catalogue a book, how you respond to somebody #CILIPconf24
Little acts of influence people are making, that they don’t talk about or put into strategy. Mentioned in project- could become strategy. Becomes less of a conflict. Between us all we can do several things over time, and justify them #CILIPconf24
eg of someone making a complaint in a poor working class area about the amount of money being spent on resources representing a particular community. Response: document concerns. We need to represent and share information about all. And then made these resources even more visible. #CILIPconf24
Amy: In libraries we can be paralysed by anticipating these challenges. But people are dealing with the reality of them every day. #CILIPconf24
Question. How do you negotiate opposing views within marginalised communities? Making a decision that helps one community, but is against what another group believes. #CILIPconf24

Students should be facilitated to write about what they are interested in, and taught how to write a paragraph, introduce a topic. Students often don’t even know that they can write about what’s interesting to them #CILIPconf24
Books are dangerous, they tell us things about ourselves that are not true, or are small aspects. And become an identity. Citing Lindiwe Smith? #CILIPconf24
Sara has a background in supporting people with dissertations. In the flexibility of the English language. #CILIPconf24 Interesting that the student is seen as separate from the work.
Question for Sara: How do you reconcile freedom of expression with rigid prescriptive requirements of academic study. How do you recommend students get the right balance without jeopardising their studies? #CILIPconf24
