I think my job is actually taking my recent callery pear removal proposal seriously.

Thanks to the Missouri Senate bill 105, which makes callery pear illegal to sell starting January 1st, 2029.

#CalleryPear trees (including the ‘Bradford’ pear) may look pretty, but they’re causing problems for native ecosystems and are species invasive here in Virginia.

Better Alternatives: native flowering trees like serviceberry, redbud, or dogwood instead—they support wildlife and look beautiful.

Invasive callery pears overtaking an abandoned field in Spalding County, Georgia. Seeds are spread far and wide by birds. An old field can go from grass, to being completely dominated by callery pears in 10-15 years. They are very difficult to eradicate once established. The spikes on the branches will puncture tractor tires.

We need to emphasize the "invasiveness" part of the picture. In much of the eastern US, ornamental pears are in an exponential growth phase, overgrowing old fields and becoming the dominant species. They should never be planted for any reason! See alt text.
