The figure of Budai Heshang, whose story is based on a historical monk active at the end of the Tang period, gained popularity as early as the Song dynasty. He is often depicted surrounded by children. His name, Budai, meaning "cloth bag,' " derives from the sack that invariably accompanies him. He is frequently shown carrying this hemp bag containing all his possessions, along with a short cord of eighteen beads symbolising the Eighteen Luohan. Perhaps because of his cheerful appearance, he became one of the most sought-after figures on the export market in the eighteenth century. In English-speaking countries, he is also commonly known as the "Fat Buddha."

A unique tradition within Batak sculpture are the puppets known as si galegale. In former times, si galegale appeared at funerals, where they served as stand-ins for the sons of men who had no male children to perform their mortuary rites. Moved by a complex system of internal strings controlled by a puppeteer, si galegale participated in funerary dances alongside the deceased's family. With the aid of moistened balls of moss inside its head, some were even able to shed tears for their dead fathers.

Collected in situ by French anthropologist Robert Gessain during the 1934-35 Greenland Expedition. Exhibited in Paris in 1935 and published in Demoulin-Bernard's "Masques", "1965: placing it among the best documented Ammassalimiut masks known today. This mask embodies the deep spiritual world of the Ammassalimiut: human and animal merging through carved lines, fur, breath, and presence.

Amida Nyorai is the Japanese name for Amitābha, a central Buddha in Mahayana Buddhism, revered as the ruler of the Western Pure Land. He is known for his boundless light and compassion, and his vows to save all beings who call his name, ensuring their rebirth in his blissful land and offering a path to enlightenment. His "welcoming descent" is a key motif, where he is believed to meet and guide the souls of the faithful to the Pure Land upon death.

One of the greatest Nias statues (siraha salawa) extant, representing an important chiefly ancestor. This statue has a well-documented history in Europe, as it once belonged to the cosmetics magnate Helena Rubinstein. She was dubbed "the empress of beauty" by Jean Cocteau, as much for her outstanding collection of art as for her business acumen. This statue was the subject of a famous 1926 photograph taken by the famed Dadaist and conceptual artist Man Ray. "The Moon Rises over the Island of Nias" appeared on the cover of an inaugural exhibition at the Galerie Surréaliste entitled Tableaux de Man Ray et objects des îles. On that occasion, Man Ray's photographs were displayed alongside more than sixty sculptures from Indonesia and the Pacific Islands that had been loaned from the legendary collection of André Breton.

a SUBLIME vintage 1930s 40s African tribal hand carved wood and copper studs stylized African Woman elongated head sculpture from the Mangbetu people of the DRC. An early and quite strikingly beautiful African tribal art sculpture depicting the body/head modification practices of the Mangbetu people of the Congo. No doubt artworks like this are what inspired Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani to create his depictions of elongated faces in his iconic portraits! Entirely hand carved from solid wood, and with applied handmade copper 'necklace', 'earrings', and studs at top of the head as shown in the photos. As you can see the entire sculpture is elongated from a natural shape, and this is no doubt a depiction of a young African woman whose tribe practices body modification, specifically the head region. African body and head modification includes practices like artificial cranial deformation, such as the elongated heads of the Mangbetu people of north-east Democratic Republic of the Congo. Babies' heads were bound with cloth to create the desired shape. As adults, the effect was emphasised by wrapping the hair around a woven basket frame so that the head appeared even more elongated. This sculpture is unmarked, and I am guessing of African origin, likely the Mangbetu people of the Congo. Measures 12-5/8" high by 7-1/4" wide by 4-1/4" deep at base. Weighs over 2.6 pounds prior to packing. In any case, a lovely vintage Art Deco era sculpture with a tribal theme! Excellent vintage condition overall with some slight spots of wear to the finish and tarnish to the metal parts but no damage or detractors whatsoever.

The cham dance is a lively masked and costumed dance associated with some sects of Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhist festivals. The dance is accompanied by music played by monks using traditional Tibetan musical instruments. The dances often offer moral instruction relating to karuṇā (compassion) for sentient beings and are held to bring merit to all who perceive them. Chams are considered a form of meditation and an offering to the gods. The leader of the cham is typically a musician, keeping time with a percussion instrument like cymbals, the one exception being Dramyin Cham, where time is kept using dramyin.

A one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel and carved two-tone wood modernist figural Three Women design artwork by Miami Beach artist/enamelist Anita Fletcher. Entirely handmade hand carved two-tone irregular asymmetrical wood frame surrounds three inset enamel panels each featuring a different female form in cloisonné enamel. Looks like the ebonized wood has been inset with the lighter colored wood which in turn was inset with the three enamel plaques. (See my closeup photos of the varied coloring of the enamel figures. There is a subtlety to the enamel that isn't apparent from a distance.) A stupendous work of original art from the mid-century of Miami Beach! Measures 15" wide by 13" tall by about 1" at thickest point. Signed at front in the enamel at bottom of the enamel panel farthest to the left, "AF". Also, still retains the original gallery sticker at back for the Huber Gallery at 3917 Alton Road in Miami Beach, and dated 1958. Some of the label has been worn over the years, but I can still make out "enamel on copper and carved wood". Also, still has the artist name, Anita Fletcher, clearly marked. There is some splitting to the wood framing the enamel, but the enamel plaques are flawless. There is also some edge wear and what looks like paint splatter along the outer edges of the ebonized wood frame which I haven't touched, leaving this artwork completely as found. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveats but no damage or detractors whatsoever as shown and ready to hang on the wall.

The Inupiat are a group of Alaska Natives whose traditional territory roughly spans northeast from Norton Sound on the Bering Sea to the northernmost part of the Canada–United States border. Iñupiaq is spoken throughout much of northern Alaska and is closely related to the Canadian Inuit dialects and the Greenlandic dialects, which may collectively be called "Inuit" or Eastern Eskimo, distinct from Yupik or Western Eskimo. These are the people of the ice as much as the land, and much of their life and culture revolves around the sea ice. Subsistence, or traditional hunting and gathering practices, provide a large part of their diet to this day. The Iñupiat hunt both marine and land mammals, and also birds. They fish and gather berries in season. Most of the communities in the northern and northwest Arctic region can only be flown to, but some are occasionally accessed by boat. There is no road system that connects them all, which is true for much of Alaska. During the winter, some of the communities can be reached by snowmobile. Utqiaġvik (formerlly Barrow) is one of the largest Iñupiaq settlements in Alaska and is the northernmost community in the United States. The Nalukataq whaling festival is held in Utqiaġvik in June following a successful whaling season. The purpose of the festival is to appease the spirits of deceased whales so that they will return in the form of new whales the next season. In addition to dancing, singing, and food, the whaling festival includes a tradition familiar to some visitors — the blanket toss. While it's now conducted as entertainment, it didn’t originate that way. An Iñupiaq hunter would be tossed in the air, enabling him to see across the horizon to hunt game. During today's celebrations, thirty or more Iñupiaq gather in a circle, holding the edges of a large skin made from walrus hides, and toss someone into the air as high as possible.

Malagan ceremonies are a means by which whole communities can express their reverence for the deceased. It is not a time of grief but a festival for honouring the dead. Malagan carvings are owned by particular clans and are made for ceremonies by specially commissioned carvers. The "ges" mask, a specific type of Malagan mask, represents the spiritual double or "bush spirit" of an individual, particularly the deceased, and refers to a type of mask used in the Malagan ceremonies of Northern New Ireland, Papua New Guinea, that represents the spiritual double of an individual, often a deceased ancestor, and is used to honor the dead and ward off malevolent spirits.
