Hanging off the edge of a gray tree trunk is a mostly white and black woodpecker with a bright red crown, and just the finest few streaks of red on his belly. The background is light blue mush with some fine black branches from distant trees.

An American Robin, on the ground (dirt and twigs) in Central Park, NYC. Its head to tail feathers are deep black, with just a hint of a white ring around its eye. The beak is very short and sharp-pointed. Most of the front of this bird is an orange-red. It is standing in profile so we are seeing its right side.

American Robin A familiar North American songbird (Turdus migratorius) As for the migratory part, I'm not sure where they winter, but they sure are now chirping like crazy, April in New York. This one was in Central Park. As a child this was a favorite seen near my home, more colorful than the crows of the burbs and countryside, or the city's ubiquitous pigeons. The super fancy ones were blue jays. I was surprised by the loud and constant chirping last night, and pulled out my "Merlin" app. Even inside I got an immediate ID, and was a little surprised - as more often I use this app down South along the coast and in the swamps. Nice song. "Better than mourning doves", the other loud bird here, there, everywhere...

On this day in 1847 the inspiration for New York's #CentralPark opened in #Birkenhead. One of the world's first publicly funded parks, Birkenhead Park was designed by George Paxton, who also made Princes Park. Central Park's designer visited in 1858 + took the "People's Garden" idea back to NYC.
