A post from the Ames history museum Today in Ames history: the chemical and physical laboratory building and Iowa state burned down on March 25, 1913. It was located near where Pearson Hall is today. The building was originally constructed in 1870 and added onto several times. It was completely destroyed in the fire. The chemistry department had needed a larger building for more than a decade, and the fire finally spurred an allocation for a new Chemistry Hall. It opened in 1914. In 1973, the building was named Gilman Hall.

Thayer, MO. – The Oregon County Recycling facility is asking for the public to be on the lookout for antique bottles that were sold at an auction Monday night that could both contain and be leaking dangerous chemicals. The chemicals in the bottles are believed to include mercury, cyanide, chloroform, arsenic, and strychnine. None of these substances should be handled without proper protective equipment, as they can enter the bloodstream through contact alone.
