A view of Cheonggeyecheon Stream in Seoul, South Korea. People stroll on the side paths. Reeds and grasses sway gently. A burnt orange bridge spans the stream in the background. Some of Seoul's many modern buildings stand in the background.

Cheonggyecheon Stream is maybe the greatest example of urban re-purposing I've seen. Only NYC's High Line competes. Historically, there was a stream on this location. After WWII, Seoul and Korea rapidly modernized. The stream was replaced by an elevated highway. Eventually, the local populace complained of air pollution, a diminished quality of life next to the highway, traffic jams in spite of the highway, etc.

In 2003, the government of Seoul tore down the highway and replaced it with Cheonggyecheon Stream. It was an instant hit, and it remains popular today. At times on the weekend, there are so many people here that "traffic jams" occur. The place is crowded both day and night. Catfish and other fish forage in the stream. Herons and egrets eat some of the fish, while magpies, crows, andn other birds sing and squawk from the trees.

If you ever get to Seoul, definitely makes this your first stop.
