Arise! It’s yet another #christmasbirdcount day! Stretch, pop some ibuprofen, and put on your comfy shoes. Or none of that if you’re a White-breasted Nuthatch and naturally over caffeinated already. 🪶

Participated in Audubon Christmas Bird Count for my area 12/27/25. In addition to hundreds of birds and other wildlife, there were many beautiful green and blue spaces with native trees and plants. Sharing a few of the many photos.

Great fun on the Whitehorse, Yukon #ChristmasBirdCount today... warmed up to -32C, so no worries! 12 species in my zone, and at least 5 more that I know of counted by others. We'll end up with a total in the mid twenties as usual, I am sure! Will update when I know more... 1/2

#christmasbirdcount was today where I live. Much lower numbers than in previous years but it was -36C. Thinking of birds and hoping they are staying safe, somewhere.

98% sure this is a cackling goose? Haha. We stared at this flock of 100+ geese for what felt like 45 minutes cuz Merlin said it heard a cackling goose. I got up and walked away, but came back and was like, THAT ONE looks smaller?! #birds #birding #ChristmasBirdCount

"Know Your Northern Cardinals" comic by illustrator and author Rosemary Mosco. In the upper left-hand corner, there is a juvenile with brown feathers, a brown beak, and a crest. In the upper right-hand corner, there is an adult male with red feathers, red beak, and a crest. In the lower left-hand corner, there is a molting male cardinal, missing all of its head feathers but a few random crest feathers. Rosemary Mosco calls this a "bloödcheëp." In the lower right-hand corner, there is a female cardinal with brown feathers, a red beak, and a crest.

Most birds molt a few feathers at a time. But some species, like the Northern cardinal, do away with all of their head feathers at once. Comment "✋🏽" if you've seen a bald cardinal before. Comment "👎🏽" if you haven't and this really weirds you out. #ChristmasBirdCount

Hundreds of Larus gulls in flight and on the ground, foraging for food scraps on trash mountain.

Landfills have become well-trodden stopover locations for Larus species of the west coast, used by both resident Olympic Gulls and migratory Glaucous-winged Gulls and Cook Inlet hybrids from as far north as southern Alaska, perhaps further. These generalists also spend time foraging in nearby farm fields and Boundary Bay.
