DYK ancient Romans, like Israelites, had to have unharmed testes in order to give testi-mony? #Eunuchs & women couldn’t testi-fy for 1,000s of yrs bc they had no testi-cles! Ghosts of #GenderHistory still haunt. HowSexGotScrewedUp.com #ClassicsTwitter #TrumpChristians #WmnHist

I made this thread a month ago and I really put a lot of thought into it, which I enjoyed. Thinking back over the several years since I joined #ClassicsTwitter and now #ClassicsBluesky 🏺, I realise how much I've learned and how much I've grown in confidence with this material. Thank you all.

DYK #rape was a kind of founding principle for Rome? Its chilliness about sex played out over & over again in the many rape myths that make up the history of the state. The sacrifice of chaste women led to glory for the state.

SPOLIA MOSAIC SQUARES, C6 CE, REUSED IN FLOOR, 1535. S. VITALE, RAVENNA

The opus sectile and mosaic floor of the octagonal basilica of S. Vitale in Ravenna has lived through many difficult times. Begun during the rule of the Goths in 532 CE, the basilica was consecrated in 547 by which time the emperor Justinian had conquered the Goths and re-established direct imperial control over Italy. Ravenna became the capital of the exarchate or governorship of Italy, built as it was on the Adriatic coast and surrounded by swamps which were better than walls in terms of defence. But low-lying Ravenna suffered from rising water levels, and by the 1530s the original pavement had lost large sections of mosaic. So the restorers took what was left and cut it into squares, and fit it into a new opus sectile floor just as if the ancient mosaic were precious stone. We can see fragments of geometric designs but also texts and vegetal elements.

Well, I've finally done it. Duplicated my X account as it seems to be collapsing, and will be posting in both places until X finally meets its deserved end. Hoping that my friends from #ClassicsTwitter will be able to find me. This is a test repost from last #Sunday, #SpoliaSunday as I know it.

A very sad end. We call it a hellsite now, but specialized communities like #ClassicsTwitter were astonishing spaces of shared learning, support, news, and much more. I have friends for life that I made there.

So I am now going to write the cover letter to submit this article manuscript (eeek!), and I have remembered that I have a blog post with my template submission letter (as it was, e-mail as it is now), so I figured I'd share it again in case it is useful. #academia #ClassicsTwitter
