Base: Tirpitz Battery Type: 28cm Coastal Battery Nation: Germany - Kaiserliche Marine & Marine Korps Location: Ostend, Belgium Date: 1914 Sailors & marines pose with the 28cm battery that was one of twenty seven coastal batteries operated by Germany around Ostend & Zeebrugge Belgium. Early in the war, the converted warship guns used as coastal & siege artillery were operated by sailors & officers of the Kaiserliche Marine. These guns had a range of 35km. Only the five larger “Langer Max” 38cm guns had greater range in the area. The battery was demolished by Germany when they retreated from the area. The Imperial War Museum’s digital catalog has a number of photos from this time period. *photograph from a private collection

In Ostend, Belgium likely sometime in 1914, German sailors and marines pose with the 28cm guns of the Battery Tirpitz. It was one of twenty seven coastal batteries in the area.
