A visit to Colchester Castle in Essex. The castle was built in the late 11thC, on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius. It has the largest area of any medieval tower in Europe, including the White Tower in the Tower of London. #colchestercastle #colchester #medieval #castle

A photo of the skull in a display case at Colchester Castle alongside a "griffin" egg. The skull has a curved beak at the front, a high nostril, a small eye socket in the middle, and a relatively short bony frill projecting up and back. There are also some teeth at the back of the jaws and the lower jaw is deep. The skull bone is ochre whereas the base of the case is green.

There are only a few days left to see this cast of a skull of #Protoceratops which is currently on display at #ColchesterCastle. The original specimen comes from the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia. It belonged to a quadrupedal plant-eating dinosaur.

Two boys interact at a museum exhibit; one, wearing a green sports shirt, proudly shows a sketchbook featuring hand-drawn mythical creatures, while the other, in a burgundy top, watches with interest. A red pencil lies on the wooden cabinet between them, hinting at creative activities available. Behind them is a stone-textured wall and part of a colourful display. Promotional text announces the "Mythical Creatures" exhibition at Colchester Castle, running from 26 July 2025 to 22 February 2026. The Colchester Castle logo and photo credit to Tom Archer are also visible.

A fragment of iron corrosion is attached to the base of a broken jug, suggesting historical or archaeological significance. Overlaid text asks, "What's special about some iron corrosion stuck to the base of a broken jug?" prompting curiosity about the object's context or origin.

This jug fragment once held iron nails, buried beneath a home to keep evil away. Would you trust a witch bottle to protect your house today?

Two children lean on a railing inside Colchester Castle, looking towards a large, brightly coloured dragon sculpture suspended from the ceiling. The dragon is made from a translucent, scale-patterned material in shades of turquoise and green, with yellow accents on its wings and underbelly. Above the scene, text on a blue banner reads: “Mythical Creatures, 26 Jul 2025 – 22 Feb 2026.” The Colchester Castle logo is placed in the bottom left corner, and the credit “Tom Archer Photography” is faintly visible in the lower right.
