A snowy view over treetops lower on the mountainside, of a large river far below, and steep snow covered mountainsides across the river. A lot of forest cover can be seen on the mountainsides, as well as exposures of steep rocky terrain without trees. The upper mountain tops across the river are masked by actively falling snow at about the same elevation that the photo was taken from. The dark green trees in the foreground have contrasting snowflakes falling in front of them as it snows hard on the mountain.

It snowed fairly heavily later on this hike, almost completely filling my snow tracks I'd made on my way up the mountain.

I was prepared, so it just added to the lovely adventure of the hike.

A photo from a high vantage point above a winding river between steeply rising forested mountainsides. The river curves toward the left from behind a nearby rock face at lower right, curves past a few inlets and jutting shores before curving sharply back to the right and disappearing. It reflects a gentle light from the sky, with textures from waves on it's surface at a distance. The mountainsides that rise to either side from the rivers shores are covered in dense green conifer forests. Some in the lower left are in the foreground where individual trees are visible. The more distant forested mountains appear bluer. The sky above the mountains is full layers of great grey tumbling clouds with ragged gaps showing brightly highlighted clouds, but no blue sky.

An American Kestrel sits on his comfy perch. His facial markings, 2 black, vertical bars on each side, one under the eye & one over the ear, are striking. His body has brown feathers barred with black on the top and tawny vertical bars on a pale brown belly/chest. His small beak is very sharp and his intense black eyes are staring us down. Really, though, he was a sweetheart.

Found this picture of a kestrel I met at the visitor's center at The Dalles, OR. Offering it for #BirdoftheDay and the theme #staredown. He was a permanent resident, couldn't be released due to injury. First kestrel I ever saw; I fell in love!
