Kansas irrigator touts technology to conserve water On the western edge of Republic County near Courtland, Kansas, third-generation farmer Richard Lindberg is proving that innovation and conservation can go hand in hand. Richard and his wife Melanie own and operate Lindberg Family Farms. For many years, they’ve discussed and adapted the farm’s irrigation strategies to meet the realities of limited water resources. The farm’s geography presented additional challenges, split almost in half by railroad tracks. With help from Deshler, Nebraska-based Reinke in the past year, Lindberg met that challenge and even earned the Republic County Conservation District’s Key Banker Award for water conservation. The honor recognizes Kansas farmers who demonstrate exceptional stewardship of agricultural and natural resources. Lindberg’s operation stood out for its adoption of advanced irrigation technology designed to maximize water efficiency in an area with water use restrictions. Improving irrigation Lindberg Family Farms has been irrigating crops for several decades as the farm was purchased 80 years ago. Like many operations in the region, irrigation began with siphon tubes and eventually evolved into graded irrigation pipe systems. While effective for their time, those methods typically deliver only about 50 to 60% irrigation efficiency. As water supplies have tightened over the years, Lindberg realized a more...

Landscape Plan To Conserve Nature In Growing City Important work continues in protecting key environmental values while supporting sustainable development in our growing city. Responding to a self-initiated Special Report by the former Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment, the ACT Government has announced updates to multiple environment and planning commitments which go towards addressing matters raised in the report. The Government is progressing considerable work on the establishment of an Urban Growth Boundary, and we have determined that the foundation of the boundary will be outlined in the future ACT Landscape Plan. The Landscape Plan will take a long-term, strategic, spatial approach to urban growth while incorporating our nature conservation objectives across Canberra. The plan will also have a strong climate adaptation focus, alongside providing a strategic direction for urban heat mitigation. Supported by Missing Middle reforms and a new Climate Change Strategy, the Government is building a pathway forward for sustainable development within our landscape, while ensuring a whole-of-government approach to protecting key environmental values and addressing climate change. The Government is also consulting on a new Nature Conservation Strategy, which sets out a nature-positive and whole-of-landscape approach to caring for ACT's environment for the next decade. The strategy advances our approach to nature conservation, to...

Oahu residents asked to conserve water during storm The Board of Water Supply is urging all Oahu residents to continue to conserve water during this weekend’s storm and use it only for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. Officials said power outages are affecting BWS’s water system serving the North Shore community, from Waialua and Mokuleia to Kawela. “All residents, especially those without power, should keep water use to an absolute minimum and should not fill containers at this time,” they said in a news release this morning. During a power outage, BWS has limited ability to pump water out of its wells and other water sources and up to reservoirs. Until power can be restored, the water left in the reservoirs will be all that is available. “By limiting water use, you will do your part to help your community have enough water for their needs during the outage,” BWS Manager and Chief Engineer Ernie Lau said in the release. “We need everyone’s kokua in this effort. Mahalo!” BWS officials said they hope to restore water service this morning to customers in Ahuimanu who were experiencing no water or low water pressure Friday night as a result of an earlier main break on a property line at Valley of...

Iran war pushes Asian nations into energy triage as they conserve power BANGKOK (AP) — The escalating war with Iran is pushing parts of the world into energy triage, forcing governments to choose where to cut demand or absorb costs, while prioritizing dwindling supplies. Asia is the most exposed since it relies heavily on imported fuel, much of it shipped through the now-blocked Strait of Hormuz. The narrow passage offshore from Iran is the main route for shipping a fifth of global trade in crude oil and liquified natural gas. Governments in the region are scrambling to adjust — tallying oil reserves, conserving energy, competing for supplies and trying to blunt prices. That brings difficult trade-offs: saving power may slow business activity. Prioritizing cooking gas for households can hurt restaurants and other businesses. "Even relatively modest constraints on energy use can create a drag on industrial activity," said Linh Nguyen, with the consultancy Control Risks. She pointed to Vietnam's energy-intensive export industries and warned that higher fuel costs or conservation measures could quickly raise production costs or slow factory output. Analysts warn the same hard choices could soon spread beyond Asia to fuel-importing economies in Africa and elsewhere as countries compete for scarce supplies. "The situation is common across the board," said...

Tourist visits to Madagascar help conserve some forests, but others suffer: study suggests what to do Madagascar is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. The island country is well known for its diverse and endangered range of wildlife. This includes over 100 species of lemurs and six species of majestic baobab trees found nowhere else. The country is also among the world’s poorest. About 80% of its population live below the international poverty line of US$2.15 a day. Attracting tourist visits to protected areas, such as Analamazaotra-Mantadia National Park, has long been one of Madagascar’s policy priorities. The aim is to channel tourist income towards conserving these areas. Tourist revenue is also supposed to reduce poverty through foreign currency revenue, job creation, and infrastructure development. Read more: Madagascar’s ancient baobab forests are being restored by communities – with a little help from AI Globally, tourism is a powerful way of generating income. In 2024, travel and tourism represented 10% of the global economy (US$10.9 trillion). In Madagascar, tourism revenue makes up nearly 16.6% of the country’s economy. We are a group of socio-environmental researchers who investigated the effects of tourist visits on the forests of 40 protected areas across Madagascar. The country’s natural forests shelter its rich, unique and endangered terrestrial biodiversity. An estimated 88% of...

Building new hydrography and virtual watersheds to conserve freshwater fisheries Freshwater biodiversity continues to decline across the planet due to anthropogenic impacts1,2,3. Fish species in many regions face extinction and their loss will have far-reaching implications for human well-being4. Environmental impacts that include pollution, land uses, flow regulation, and climate change5,6 accumulate within hierarchical river networks7,8,9. The resulting degraded and fragmented habitats10,11,12 are causing declines in many freshwater and diadromous fish populations worldwide3,13,14. Addressing the challenges that fish species face within freshwater ecosystems in the 21st -century depends on knowing how physical and biological features in watersheds interact to create habitats in river networks and knowing where those habitats are located at the scale of entire basins to regions15,16. Fish habitats are strongly influenced by the longitudinal sequence of channel morphologies17,18,19; channel interactions with floodplains, valley floors, and hillsides20,21; and the density and characteristics of tributary confluences22,23,24,25,26. Food resources and thermal regulation mediated by riparian vegetation, lakes and wetlands, and groundwater and hyporheic processes also influence the spatial distribution and diversity of freshwater habitats27,28,29,30. Thus, features of freshwater ecosystems that influence fish habitats have been studied at varying levels of detail and scale over the last several decades31,32,33. At the most fundamental level of mapping, a geography of rivers and...

Strengthening cooperation for coastal connectivity to conserve the world's migratory species Coastal ecosystems are among the most interconnected environments on the planet, linking terrestrial, aquatic, and marine realms and supporting ecological processes essential to the survival of migratory species throughout their life cycles. From seagrass meadows sustaining dugongs, to mangroves serving as nurseries for sharks and rays, to estuaries and intertidal wetlands that host millions of migratory birds, coasts play an irreplaceable role in maintaining ecological connectivity. These ecosystems feature prominently in CMS priorities and programmes, yet they are also among the most threatened globally facing pressures from habitat conversion, climate impacts, pollution, and poorly planned renewable energy development. The World Coastal Forum (WCF), a partnership of 24 organisations, was created to address these urgent challenges by strengthening cooperation, developing shared knowledge, and supporting evidence based best practices. Through initiatives such as the State of the World’s Coastal Ecosystems and practical toolkits for coastal management and restoration, the WCF provides guidance to governments and practitioners working to conserve and restore coastal systems worldwide. This side event at CMS COP15 will highlight the vital importance of coastal ecosystems in protecting migratory species and safeguarding ecological connectivity across flyways, drawing on the WCF’s work and showcasing experiences from governments, international organisations, and the...

Timely informed; timely re-wilded: How India can help conserve its small cats Wildlife rescue is a complex and double-edged process. While wildlife conservationists continuously train law enforcement agencies to identify trafficked species and crack down on illegal wildlife trade, it is equally critical to engage local communities. Community members are often the first to encounter wildlife or its body parts being poached, and their ability to identify and report such incidents is essential. This becomes especially important for the elusive group of species known as ‘small cats’. Small cats coexist with large carnivores across India, so it is inaccurate to claim that their habitats lie primarily outside protected areas. However, their presence in semi‑urban and urban regions is notably high. Most small cat species are roughly the size of domestic cats but retain their wild instincts. They hunt and survive independently—abilities lost through domestication. As a result, even small, fragmented patches of habitat—wetlands, agricultural fields, community lands, or green belts—can support their survival. These mosaic landscapes also overlap heavily with human activity, increasing the chances of people encountering them. During rice or sugarcane harvesting, for instance, cat litters may suddenly become exposed. Road and highway construction can reveal rock mounds near rivers, inadvertently exposing resident small cats. And in cases where authorities...

Stony Brook Researchers Seek Worldwide Solutions to Conserve Coral Reefs Newswise — STONY BROOK, NY—January 22, 2026—Coral reefs, the “rainforests of the sea,” provide habitats for 25% of all marine life. Critical to global biodiversity, they are essential for food supply, culture and recreation and coastal protection from hurricanes for communities around the world and even contain a vast array of bioactive chemical compounds that could be critical to medical advances. But half of the world’s coral reefs have been lost in the last 50 years and scientists fear that warming seas from climate change will decimate 70-90% of what remains by the end of this century. However, while climate change is the greatest single threat to coral reefs worldwide and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is critical for their wellbeing, this alone will not ensure their survival. Coral reefs also face pressures from destructive fishing, harmful tourism, coastal development, unsustainable land use, oil spills and several other threats that often require regional solutions that span country borders. Addressing these threats is also key to ensuring that coral reefs are as resilient as possible against the accelerating impacts from climate change. While the outlook for coral reefs may look dire, faculty members from the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS)...
