Two women (described by the museum as laundresses) stand in a shallow doorway and lean into conversation. An older woman at left has light skin, a wrinkled face, and a white headscarf tied under her chin as her arms fold across her chest and her expression reads as doubtful, guarded, and thoroughly unconvinced. Another older woman at right, also light-skinned and shown mostly from the back and profile, bends forward insistently with one hand raised as if emphasizing a point. Both wear long blue skirts and aprons, with red accents in the speaker’s shawl/sash. A broom, bucket, and cloth at the threshold reinforce the domestic scene. Danish artist Carl Bloch uses a rounded panel top, dark interior shadow, and bright sunlit wall to frame their gestures so the drama is carried by posture, hands, and faces rather than action.

What makes the painting memorable is how much social observation Bloch compresses into a small format. The Nivaagaard Collection text notes his interest in Copenhagen’s working-class subjects and in humorous, everyday scenes. That emphasis shows here because this is not an idealized allegory of womanhood but a charged moment of ordinary speech, skepticism, insistence, and relationship. The museum also points to Bloch’s caricature-like expressiveness and to Dutch Golden Age genre painting as a touchstone. Both feel visible in the animated body language and the almost theatrical timing of the exchange.

Painted in 1874, the work also sits within Bloch’s mature career after his Italian years, when he was already an established Danish artist capable of moving between grand commissions and intimate genre scenes. Even while he was known for ambitious historical and religious paintings, Bloch continued to give close attention to working women as subjects worthy of wit, presence, and psychological nuance.

The Danish title “Ung kikuyu-pige” is often translated as “Portrait of a Young Kikuyu Girl.” Museum notes describes the sitter as renowned for her beauty and she reportedly married with a high bride dowry, but her personal name is not recorded, a reminder of how easily a life can be reduced to type. Blixen painted the work during her Kenya years, later revisited in her 1937 memoir “Den afrikanske farm (Out of Africa).”

A young Kikuyu girl is painted from the shoulders up, turned left, her gaze lowered as if listening inward. Her deep brown skin is built with layered strokes of cool charcoal and violet shadows under the jaw and around the eye, warmer sienna and russet highlights along cheekbone and forehead l, so her face is luminous and calm rather than posed. Her eyelids are heavy, lashes darkened, and her mouth rests closed in a neutral, self-possessed expression. A broad headscarf wraps her close-cropped dark hair, banded in muted rose, beige, and smoky gray as a folded tail sits near an ear which has a big looped earlobe. Around her neck, a wide red collar encircles her neck and catches a thin pale glint at its edge. Two bead strands, one red and one blue, drop over her shoulders and cross her chest, adding crisp color against an earth-toned palette. Her bare shoulder is brushed in warm browns, with visible grain and dry-brush. Behind her, an even wash of sandy tan and pale gold is softly scumbled, creating an atmosphere keeping the sitter’s presence at the center.

Born Karen Christentze Dinesen, Blixen is also known by pen names including Isak Dinesen, She began as a visual artist and carried that eye into her writing. She trained seriously in drawing in Copenhagen and took classes in Paris before Kenya reshaped her life. In the 1920s, she painted portraits and studies alongside the demanding work of running a coffee farm. After returning to Denmark in 1931, she set painting aside for literature; however, this portrait tells its story even to this day.

A new painting I created during my stay at @elisabethveerbeek_artist’s studio in Rotterdam.
Amazing how fresh energy flows when you work in a new environment and atmosphere. I love it. 🤓

Have a lovely Day.

Danish Romantic painter Vilhelm Kyhn’s oil-on-canvas “Girl at a Window” (sometimes referred as Day Dreams) is a “picture within a picture” featuring a young woman with shoulder-length blonde hair observing the snow-laden winter landscape from a large window from the comfort of her home while wearing warm long-sleeve casual attire. The theme of the woman or girl in a domestic interior at or near a window can be traced back to the 17th century and to the works of certain Dutch artists like Johannes Vermeer.

During the Romantic Period in the early 19th century, this theme became central to the work of Northern European artists, especially those working in Germany and Denmark. This quietly poetic painting by Kyhn captures the spirit of Danish Golden Age painting and is the first painting by a Scandinavian artist to enter the High’s collection.

Naked vampire girl with long hair, resting after a nice feeding?

So, let's do a little throwback post. This was an illustration I made back in 2023. I never really titled is (I usually don't) but I did note down "Human, right?" in the meta description
