The echoing slam of the metal flap as it swings shut again rattles his nerves, muscles stiff from tension and exhaustion without any decent sleep. He knows he should really try, but he can’t pull it off when Husk has no idea what Angel is doing or enduring while missing from his cell, and he’s already been pulled out and put back in three times, gone for hours on end. Joints creaking and a vague nausea in his gut, Husk climbs off the cot and shivers at the chill on his feet. He needs a real drink soon or he’ll be fucking useless, but he’s not about to tell these people he’s an alcoholic when it’s such an easy exploit and they already threatened to starve him just to fuck with Angel. He looks down at the food — white-ish mash that might be potatoes, a shriveled, square hunk of brown “meat,” a tiny water bottle, and a waxy-looking apple — and cocks an eyebrow, going still. There’s something else on the tray, too. A folded piece of scrap paper tucked under the apple. Leaning toward the door, he tries to peek down the hall both ways for any sign of the orderly that delivered the tray. He spies no one, ducking to scoop the tray up and retreating to the cot, keeping his back to the camera as he sets his food down. The apple rolls onto its side as he swipes up the paper and cracks open the water with one hand to at least pretend he’s not just messing with contraband if someone peeks through the viewing window.

Angel cringes and balls his trapped hands into fists, jaw taut. “But I can’t protect you forever, amorcito. You’re not in trouble for running away from home, you’re in trouble for running away from the experiment, baby.” He tuts, stroking Angel’s hair as if he were a beloved pet, a dreamy look in his eye. He lightly drags nails down Angel’s neck before running them back up and around his ear, making him shiver and shut his eyes as he cants his face away. “Pobrecito!” Val coos. Poor thing.

Maybe it’s a little counterproductive to have both at once, but he can’t go cold turkey and they don’t really have time for him to grab a nap after all. It didn’t take him the full two hours he’d mentioned to Niffty when he didn’t have too many calls left to make on the way here, just checking in with Hal. His men should very literally be looking the other way when Husk sneaks Angel out. There’s a chance this goes smoothly, that they get out of town before the don and that medical director get wise. If the two don’t meet until tonight, the man whose mention made Angel turn even paler might not even have left that fucked up Facility yet. Husk doesn’t want to get his hopes up, but maybe clinging to the possibility that Angel doesn’t have to see his abusive father or any of his other torturers again is good. Husk can do this for Angel, and maybe for himself. Maybe, for her, he can save one more life. He’d also be lying if he said he could live with himself if Angel had to go back to the Facility or find out what Enrico has to say to his missing trans kid after ten years pretending Angel was definitely dead already. a snippet from Chapter 4: Perks He feels sick. Was that close? That felt *close.* He can’t tell if DiLuca realizing Angel is an adult helps him or hurts him in this situation. Would he have gone further if he’d known? Wait, fuck, he said that was that the only reason he didn’t! He’d definitely been only half a second from pulling Angel’s sweats down before he *bit* the bastard to stave him off the first time. Swallowing a heavy lump in his throat, Angel carefully crawls back onto the cot and huddles against the wall, hugging the pillow. He’ll have to plan his bathroom breaks carefully, getting the sense DiLuca is willing to perv on him through that stupid wired window in the door. At least having the lights off might give him some semblance of privacy there. The next few hours are tense and incredibly boring. Angel has nothing to do in here, and his brain is a fucking curse when he’s idle, running impossible scenarios and flitting off on pointless tangents. He thinks about how he can get out of the city once he’s out of this building. He thinks about risking a run back to his old house to see if Pops still has certain caches in the same places Angel never dared take the time to look when he ran away. That could seed fleeing the city and buying a few meals and a place to stay once he’s far enough away. He could use it to pay a long hauler or stick to his original plan of whoring his way out of this godforsaken place. Sometimes he thinks he should’ve done that long ago, but then he wouldn’t have met Rosie, and he wouldn’t trade the time he had with her for anything.
