Wasabi - Eutrema japonicum- in its pot in the greenhouse, while it aclimates to its new home

All parts of Wasabi are edible, which allows for some tasting before the rhizomes mature! 😊 🪴

I appreciate happening upon the channel 12 interview with Clint Taylor from OSU extension service, highlighting his work with the Wasabi farmers in Tillamook!

Ooo - Oregon Wasabi? I ordered the same day!

For those curious about growing conditions - yes!
In Japan, Wasabi is traditionally grown on the banks of cool, clear streams!!

In home gardens in the Willamette Valley, they do well in large pots with a 50/50 mix of growing medium (potting soil, coconut coir) and perlite or gravel!

They like regular watering - but not standing water! They need air (hence the perlite or gravel in the Growing medium!)

A spot that's shady, and 40-70° F is their happy place!

Growing in a pot makes it easy to keep them in a shady spot, or bring them inside when temperatures drop.

Have you tasted or grown real Wasabi?

Oregon Coast Wasabi ships nationwide, and you can use the code SPRING10 for the 10% discount - which covered the postage!!

Wasabi starts - Eutrema japonicum
They come as bareroot starts, in a 50/50 mix of coconut coir or potting mix and perlite, vehicle or small round gravel, ready to be planted out!

A perennial which doesn't go dormant, Wasabi has been broken in Japan over 10,000 years!

All parts of the plant are tasty and edible, new starts can be taken from around the Central rhizome when you're ready to harvest (~ 18 -24 months.

Growing up, we had a couple of big rhubarb in our sandy Central Oregon soil - and my mom made great crisps!
I've had several starts of Crambe since first seeing them 50 years ago.
The valley clay soil can be a challenge for Crambe

I stopped by Buchanan Cellers and picked up two bags of Teufel OG compost - spread a layer on three beds - they look happy. 🌱 🌱 🌱

You might find joy in #Edimentals. The word was originally coined by Stephen Barstow, who wanted a focus on edible, ornamental perennials. I think the word took on a life of its own, and became insta-friendly. The perennial part slipped away, so now many will use it for "pretty and edible".

Rearranged the living room plants today, since the #physalis seedling has grown half a meter since we took it indoors. It now has a pot big enough to keep it going until May arrives with frost free nights again. 😊
