Born in the 1940s, Edmund knew he was gay from a young age, and thanks to attitudes of the time, believed he had to be cured in order to be a successful writer.

I missed #wheresmybookwednesday - again. But I have a lot on my plate, so I’m not going to be too hard on myself. This past Wednesday, you could find one of the several books I was reading in our walk-through closet. #edmundwhite #thelovesofmylife #malephysique #malenude #malephotography
A page in White’s Story which contains the quote in the post.
‘People liked homosexuals if they were a sort of funhouse reflection of their own image. They didn’t want them to be completely different.’ Edmund White, ‘Give it Up for Billy’ (2002;2007) #Queer #Gay #EdmundWhite

From "A Race upon Which a Curse Is Laid" by Edmund White, in The Proust Project, edited by André Aciman. "This is Proust's most extreme idea, that the triumph of Christianity has engendered two accursed races, Jews and homosexuals." "It's not just homosexuality that is an illness in Proust but love itself in all its forms."
Rest in #pride, #EdmundWhite. In "A Race upon Which a Curse Is Laid" from The #Proust Project (ed. André Aciman), he seems to acknowledge his ambivalence regarding Proust’s views on homosexuality but also delivers this knockout one-two punch. #booksky
Nocturnes For The King Of Naples, Edmund White
A sensual, poetic series of letters to a lost love—White at his most evocative, erotic, and elegiac.

‘No matter. I thought you, the reader of the future, the solitary twenty-year-old in Kansas, might be able to hear my voice, scratchy and bleating as it may be, as we can still hear Caruso’s. Like Walt Whitman I want to excite at least one young man not yet born…’

‘There was a scuffling and two big white-robed nurses smelling of tar soap pulled her away from the lifeless body and the open mouth, which was welling over with blood. Stephen’s eyes were open and fixed.’ (p. 217)

The great and mind-bogglingly prolific author Edmund White. I shot this during 1989 International Festival of Authors in Toronto, the first time I heard him read. From thereon I read all of his books in his voice, colouring them with more depth and a conspiratorial salaciousness. RIP #edmundwhite
"To the degree that we are creative, our work really *can't* be compared".
I think of this often. Competition in the arts is so bone-headed.
Creativity can be motivated by many things, but if it's rooted in competition, your artistry is probably on very shaky foundations.
