In #MathsToday I'm looking at all things #AdditionalPure and #ExtraPure, the Pure options on each Cambridge OCR A Level Further Maths specification.
Looking forward to our workshop on Thurs 19 March in London, Dulwich College.

#extrapure #alevelmaths final lesson on group theory content. We got to talk about Lagrange's theorem, that it leads to THE cycle groups of prime order, then to the classification of finite simple groups. We didn't cover the full proof, just the idea ๐. Two stayed online after class to ask more!
#extrapure #alevelmaths after a week off due to technology failing me we powered through a lot of definitions: order, generator, isomorphism, subgroup.
Homework is to consider the different subgroups of C_8, which are the same and which we know by other names.

#extrapure
Today we looked at a group on subsets of a set. Lots of discussions about the validity of a proof. And a great question: if I can find an identity for a single element and state that identities are unique then does this show we have an identity for the group?
#extrapure lesson three weeks review some groups and non-groups from modulo arithmetic, discussing the Latin square property. I introduced the group of transformations on an equilateral triangle. Then we looked at permutations on 3 things. Are these two the 'same'? What about addition mod 6?
#extrapure lesson two of groups theory. Went through the axioms and then reviewed examples of what were and were not groups. I'm trying to mention infinite groups more than previous years.
The visualiser provides so much flexibility to add extra questions on the fly as needed.

#extrapure first (virtual) lesson of the course. Short overview, some set theory basics using a visualiser, defn of binary operations. On to modular arithmetic. Chat blast questions work nicely to set the pace.
I will try to post each week with a summary.
