The #FalklandsWar began on #ThisDayInHistory in 1982 with occupation of #SouthGeorgia. #Argentina's dictatorship, deeply unpopular, stoked #nationalism to stay in power. #Thatcher, also unpopular (16% approval in '81) did the same. 649 Argentine & 258 British lives were the cost.

In an advance preview of the coming #FalklandsWar, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1982 #Argentina sent Marines, disguised as civilian scientists, to raise the Argentinian flag on #SouthGeorgiaIsland, a tiny British Antarctic dependency & research base. The war broke out two weeks later.

I remember the awful #FalklandsWar and the jingoistic coverage of it during the Thatcher era (1982). It left a bad taste in my mouth. An unpleasant colonialist aftermath.

During the #Reagan administration, following the #FalklandsWar , they introduced new priorities to share #democracy and #RuleofLaw norms. Resulting in a democracy surge worldwide. Wish it was still this way today.
