Neil first appeared in our consciousness as a freaky member of the band Split Enz. He was the one up front singing I Got You which he also wrote. The band was not a one hit wonder but there were tensions among the members particularly between Neil and the leader of the band, his brother Tim, which cut short the life of the band. Ultimately Tim gave his brother good advice, go and form your own band and this led to Crowded House arriving and taking over the world record charts. Jeff Apter tells us that his book focusses on the music while filling in a lot of the background to the songs and the life of Neil Finn. For many of us a song Neil wrote will have a special meaning because it appeared at an important stage of our lives and the beautiful melody burns the message into our brains. Podcast (mp3)

We can imagine sex offenders threatening their victims should the story ever get out. As Brendan discovered there may also be another reason for this instruction involving a power imbalance. Brendan knew at a young age that he had been adopted but when he started looking for his biological parents he did not know if his conception may have resulted from a sexual offence or young love or something else. One thing that kept driving Brendan was his desire to know the truth wherever that may lead. The first part of his story was surprising. His mother had been 27 when Brendan was born so she was not the teenager in trouble who adopts out her child under pressure from her family. Then the shock of finding out that his mother had been a nun, a bride of Christ. Having made this discovery Brendan was mightily disappointed when the Catholic agency acting as intermediary advised that his mother said they must never meet. Podcast (mp3)

Today’s pick was born of a photograph disguised as a memory. I myself was born in Okinawa, Japan, as my father, an Air Force Captain, was stationed there during the Vietnam War. My mother, all of six months pregnant and big as a house with my sister and me, flew over so that she could be with Dad for our birth. We stayed there for another two years before Pop resigned his commission and we came back to The States to be closer to family. The photograph in question shows my dad, a lithe, athletic man of 30, balancing me in one hand, with the beautiful Pacific Ocean in the background. This was taken somewhere around my 1st birthday, so I have no actual memory of the event, but the concept of it is very comforting. Dad and I did not see eye-to-eye on many things (such can be the nature of fathers and sons…), but we always connected through music. Both he and my mother were classically trained singers, and our house was always alive with sound, either coming through the stereo, from one or both of my parents or, eventually, all four of us. As we began to do public performances, my father would jokingly refer to us as “The Trapp Family Hudgins” (younger folks can google “The Sound Of Music” about this). As I got older and my music tastes broke past even the far-flung levees of my dad’s, we’d still have shared moments around sound. Sure, there would be times when one of my selections would get too weird for him (he definitely drew a line at Skinny Puppy…) and so we’d “change the station”, but more often than not he’d give a quizzical look, sit and listen for a minute, and then say, “Yeah. I get this.” I certainly miss those times, sitting in his backyard garden in St Augustine with music flowing out from the back door and into the dark, but there are enough collective sounds we shared that those memories shall always be at my fingertips. So with something for my dad, which whilst he never heard, he would totally “get”, here's some more (US) morning mellow.

I caught my father's reflection in the mirror today. I've found I look more and more like him as I get older, but this morning was really striking, as I almost felt like he was looking back at me through my eyes. This made me smile, but also feel a bit melancholy, as I miss him. I've fond memories of sitting in his backyard in St Augustine, Florida, late into the evening, listening to his old jazz records and whatever odd miscellany I'd brought to the table that night. Talking was never our forte, but those shared silences set to music spoke to the strange comfort we'd established, thoughts unsaid. So with something I think my dad would have enjoyed, comfort zone aside, here's some more (US) morning mellow.
