Ty Hyll (the Ugly House) is some 3 miles west of Betws-y-Coed, Its origins allegedly go back to 1475, when two brothers built themselves a hideaway in the Snowdonia forest carving the date over the fireplace. Tŷ Hyll is a house full of history, legend and mystery; no one really knows who built the house, or when. Legend says that the house was built in the 15th century overnight – a ‘tŷ unnos’ or ‘one night house’. According to tradition at that time, a house built during one night on common land, with a chimney smoking by dawn, could be claimed by the builders as their own property. Within The Ugly House, itself a nice stone cottage, is the Honey Pot Tearoom. Making homemade food using local ingredients, the tearoom is popular with locals and tourists. Enjoy homemade Bara Brith, in a traditional Welsh cottage then explore the wildlife garden and woodland that surround the House.

his rather extraordinary parish church, set on a spacious green hill above the River Severn, stands in stark contrast to Shrewsbury's medieval streets and mainly Tudor townscape. Dating from 1790-92, it is a classical church, and is built from a pale stone that sets it quite apart from the red sandstone and half-timbering that are the usual materials of Shropshire. What is more, it is a classical church with a difference: the nave is completely round. Opinions differ as to how successful a building this is. The tower, from some angles, looks almost unrelated to the rest of the church, being separated from it by a rounded antechamber. But the interior is light, bright and uncluttered. Slender white columns (made of local cast iron) support a gallery that sweeps right round the church. Charles Darwin was baptised in St Chad's church in 1809, and as a young boy attended the church with his mother Susannah In the churchyard is the grave of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Percy Thrower lived here in Quarry Lodge from January 1946 until April 1974 while Parks Superintendent for Shrewsbury Borough Council. Percy John Thrower MBE (30 January 1913 – 18 March 1988) was a British gardener, horticulturist, broadcaster and writer born at Horwood House in the village of Little Horwood, Buckinghamshire. He became nationally known through presenting gardening programmes, starting in 1956 with the BBC's Gardening Club, then the BBC's Gardeners' World from 1969 until 1976
