A white poppy flower, interior clearly visible. Why do I use the hashtag FlowersforAppalachia? I spent the first 37 years of life in the heart of Appalachia, and what I learned was, no one is taking care of it. The largest section of Appalachia that I lived near is called Monogahela, or land of many uses, and it does get USED. Not used as in recreation, but as in raped of its resources. Monoculture forests, mining, toxic metals, fracking, extract all that we can, level the mountains and cut the trees. Thing is, there is hardly any place as beautiful or magical as Appalachia. Some of our oldest mountains, spread across multiple continents. Those hills have wisdom and should be protected, not pillaged. So I use flowers for Appalachia as a reminder to myself to do better for the planet. To keep pressing forward, attempting to remind people of what is truly worthy of worship.
