Through the night, she followed the steps laid out in the book, searching for clues to find the fabled tree.
Although alone, she could feel the echo of her beloved cheering her on and protecting her…

Day 4: Book
#folktaleweekbook

This was inspired by the dark Irish folktale, "The Crooked Back". It is a story about a gifted storyteller who enjoys scaring kids with the "true" story of how her back became crooked.

The story may contain monsters ...

Tomorrow (Continued)
The next day, Eleanor Sheep was sitting on her tree swing, reading one of her favorite books. The etching of the word ‘Tomorrow’ had started to fade after the rains the day before. Eleanor hoped Death wouldn’t notice. But she was wrong.

Death approached. “Eleanor Sheep, you have cheated me for the last time! I shall come for you one last time, tomorrow.” And with that, Death went to the door of the cottage and erased anything remaining of the word ‘Tomorrow’ with his sleeve and walked away.

Eleanor Sheep did not smile. She sat on her tree swing, frightened. Eleanor had to think of a new way to outwit death.

This year I am adapting and reworking an old Hungarian Folktale about an old woman and death.

My 8” x 10” hand-tinted linocut on watercolour paper in black ink shows a brown-haired boy looking scared reading a large black book chained (with silver lock and chain) to a beige wooden table on which there is a wizard’s hat and crystal ball. Behind him in an archway is a hairy red demon with wings and horns breathing fire while pouring a wooden barrel of water onto a red geranium. The flood is covered with blue water. On the wall by the boy are shelves of books, glassware, a balance scale, jars with alchemical symbols, a skull, mushrooms and drying mandrake, rosemary and tansy.

Brigid was the Celtic goddess of poetry & wisdom. Christian monks later made Brigid the Saint of poets. It seemed only fitting I should quote an Irish poet here: the divinely talented @nikitagill.bsky.social

Nasty loves the library and even more so when it rains. That’s when all her friends come to visit, to read and dream together. They light tiny lamps and dive into the pages of their favorite books.
