This is the main path to Wistman's Wood on Dartmoor. The wood can be seen hugging the side of the valley. The wood itself is a unique habitat and a small remnant of the temperate rainforest that covered much of western Britain prior to the Iron Age.

A river (sizable for Britain - elsewhere this might be called a stream) winds its way over rocks in a steep wooded valley or gorge. Many years ago this valley was a hive of copper mining activity with the river providing power for water wheels to not only crush the ore but also pump the mine of water. Most of the tree cover would have grown since the abandonment of the mine.

Built in the 1850s, there is no road that this bridge connects to & there never was. The deck of the bridge was never laid & the steel hawsers were never fitted. These two piers sit, alone buried in the woods - almost a gateway to another world. It's a strange place indeed...

A little used occupation bridge in woodland on the 'Withered Arm' (part of the former London & South Western Railway in Devon. The line was closed in the 1960s. The trackbed here is now almost a bog & nature has largely reclaimed the track. These bridges are one of the few structures left standing.

Deep in this valley are hidden the remains of long abandoned buildings for both quarrying of granite and gunpowder mills. The valley is a tad damp (which is why it was chosen for gunpowder manufacture) & is also a small fragment of temperate #rainforest.
