"Carried for long, or to the last" - Franklin relics and the Goodsir family - THERE STOOD NO FRIENDLY FINGER-POST TO GUIDE US When Dr John Rae brought relics home in 1854, Jane Ross Goodsir was convinced that one had belonged to her missing brother Harry.

In Jan 1848, when Jane wrote the letter, Harry and the #FranklinExpedition were not yet "missing", but nowt had been heard from them since mid-1845. Brother Robert twice went in search, and by 1854 the family had seen enough news of relics to relinquish most hope.
