A triple-threat! Three new Ear-pick fungi sprout from an old Ear-pick fungus sprouting the more typical way from a Douglas fir cone. Another shriveled up sibling fungi lilts a bit to the right all shriveled and far less cool without anything sprouting from their noggin. Note that the 3x have a couple of other knots attempting to become fruiting body. The older fungi are a dark brown with the one sprouting children out of their head still presenting a few teeth sticking out from under their cap. The 3x younger ones have a reddish brown stem with a lighter colored tan cap. A composite of 36 pictures were focus stacked to generate this single image.

These were an absolute treat to find today!

It looks like this had grown up into a stem or something that made that impression. This is how I found it on the trail. I assumed it wouldn't be super fresh but definitely not as gooey as I found it.

I was surprised there weren't many critters under there chomping away. The gills almost look like they were melted together in some places.

A closer shot of the same fungi not really graphic but I wouldn't really want to see it mid bite of say some oatmeal...

We had been dry for the previous couple of days and most of the other fungi found that day were a bit desiccated, so the gooey insides was surprising.

A woodland scene, slightly out of focus. Horizontal across the foreground a dark branch is adorned with cheerful frills of bright yellow fungi.

Bad management of light, shade, and focus by the photographer here. The fungus on show is a series of thick plates lying flat against bark, their surfaces encrusted with short fat hairlike structures which are probably there for spore distribution.

Black bracket fungi with thin white rims grow out of mossy dead wood, sharing their meal with a group of more traditionally shaped yellow toadstools.

Curls of coppery structures, shaped partway between brackets and trumpets, sprout from an old dead tree trunk.
