Trypocopris vernalis, commonly known as the spring dor beetle. It is positioned on a textured, rocky surface with patches of yellow-orange lichen. The beetle itself is shiny black with a subtle bluish-green metallic sheen on its rounded body. Its legs are sturdy, segmented, and covered with small hairs, and the antennae are short with a slightly clubbed appearance at the ends. The beetle stands out clearly against the muted background, highlighting its glossy and robust form.
Dung beetles are the silent force cycling Earth's soils. Unfortunately, their populations are declining due to the untargeted, prophylactic use of parasiticides. This T. vernalis was found in Ireland.
