It’s always the same three Elmids found on any survey here in the East Midlands, Oulimnius tuberculatus, Elmis aenea and Limnius volckmari. Also present Orectochilus villosus and Nebrioporus elegans. #Elmidae #Coleoptera #Gyrinidae #Dytiscidae
Extreme close-up (macrophotograph) of a whirligig beetle (family Gyrinidae) showing the side of its head and thorax. The beetle has a metallic, iridescent exoskeleton with hues of green, gold, and purple. Two large compound eyes are visible—one positioned for viewing above the water's surface, and the other adapted for underwater vision. Fine sensory hairs and part of the beetle’s mandibles are visible near the mouth. The background is a striking gradient of pink and magenta, creating a surreal contrast with the beetle's dark, glossy body.
#Gyrinidae looks bizarre when you catch them in side profile like this. They have eyes staring above the water and eyes staring into the surface below, each wired to a different part of the brain. This one is quite dusty.
