James Frederick Elgar Rigden was born into a large Kent seafaring family. As a member of the #FranklinExpedition he served as Captain's Coxswain on board #HMSErebus. He was lost with all of the crew, and has no known grave. He married but had no children and his name lived on through his nephew

A daguerrotype image showing a well-built white man in 1840s Royal Navy uniform, seated and with arms crossed. He has strong features and neat mutton chops, and his hat is at a jaunty angle. He is James Walter Fairholme (1821-18??) and he was lost with the rest of the #FranklinExpedition.

It has a family crest near the top and a prominent bronze bas relief depicting angels laying floral tributes in an airy landscape replete with sundogs and trapped ships. The inscription shows that it is in memory of James Walter Fairholme of the Franklin Expedition.

Happy 204th birthday to Lieutenant James Walter Fairholme of #HMSErebus! He was a striking-looking man according to Sophia Cracroft, who noted that his prominent nose and massive lower jaw were "all remarkable". He's memorialised in the Scottish Borders town of Melrose.
