With its long maritime tradition & innovative economy, Britain has revolutionized naval engineering many times. One such was on #ThisDayInHistory in 1860 with the launch of #HMSWarrior, the first steam-powered, screw-propelled, iron-hulled warship. She is preserved in Portsmouth.

More shots from HMS Warrior. Did I mention I was very impressed? Steam and magic naval warfare… not the main arc but a scene I can’t wait to write 😊 #hmswarrior #epicfantasy

Open breech on an Armstrong gun, 1860; fuel for my next fantasy series. But what I really want to do is praise the historical interpretation aboard #hmswarrior they knew EVERYTHING and were both entertaining and deeply knowledgeable. My hat is off to all of them.

We're on a brick slipway at the water's edge in a calm harbour on a bright day. The sky above has thin veils of clouds all over but is largely a deep blue. The water is lapping gently up the slipway and the lower metre or two of the bricks are dark, indicating where the tide reaches. A dozen or more small boats are anchored mainly on the right of view, some row boats, others with motors, none able to take more than a handful of people. A large brick building is to the right, behind a jetty that stretches out and against which there is a three-masted, iron-clad, sailing ship. Its hull is black except just above the water line where it's red. There are no sails on the masts. The bowsprit mast at the front, and facing towards land, is very long. Notably, the vessel has two low, pale orange funnels mounted midships indicating it can sail under power and under wind.

For #SchiffsSamstag here's HMS Warrior beside the naval port in #Portsmouth as taken last week. Impossible to head down here and not take a picture of this 1860 frigate, the first iron-hulled warship.

The photo depicts the harbour of Portsmouth in southern England. In the centre of the image, you can see the HMS Warrior. The view is from the stern of the three-masted ship. Between the masts, one of the chimneys is visible. Through the ship's rigging, you can see the complex of buildings in the historic dockyard. To the right of the Warrior's hull, a few small boats are floating on the water. Although the ship's sails are not set, it still appears majestic and powerful.

A very bright, sunny day and we're down at a harbour area where fishing boats often come in. The harbour water in the background eventually reaches land built up with apartment blocks but much of it is hidden behind a historic black iron-hulled ship on the right and, in front of that, a row of rowing boats on the paved ground in front of us, all upright with hulls turned towards us. The boats are only big enough for a couple of people and they have weathered undersides with three of the four grouped together in shades of blue and one painted red. A few other boats are leaning to one side either side of this row that's blocking the scene. Three boats have a narrow rope tied around their middles. It's possible to consider these a group of chained protestors complaining that everyone comes down to look at the vessel behind with its masts and orange funnels while they are neglected.

We're on a cruise ship sailing close to a port area and looking down and across a short stretch of water towards a long, narrow pier against which a large, three-masted, nineteenth century frigate ship is docked, facing away from us. It has a mostly black, ironclad hull with a red base as it tapers near the waterline. The masts are very tall, wooden and warmly-toned with evening sunshine on them, all with numerous spurs, and the central mast is the tallest of the three. Two short, pale yellow funnels sit just forward of midships between the front and central masts. Behind there are buildings and low warehouses typical of an old dockyard area.

A mostly overcast day although some blue peeks through the thinner sheets of cloud in the sky, but it feels fairly warm. We're on the sea and with a small bit of wake present to the bottom right on the calm, green-blue water's surface we can tell we're at the aft of boat heading away from the land we're looking back at. That land is low-lying with a shallow beach on the right backed up by medieval stone fortifications around ten metres high with a couple of slightly larger towers on them, the leftmost of which is very round. The shoreline then becomes a wall of boulders for flood and erosion protection from the sea and this continues left almost fully before disappearing back on itself behind the spit of land here. An eclectic range of townhouses line the shore there, some up to five storeys in height. In the distance to the left there is a tall tower in white with a sharp spire and glass-fronted viewing areas high up. It bulges out with a skeletal white framework that represents billowing sails. Leftmost of all in the distance we can see masts rising up from an old sailing ship that's docked.

HMS Warrior
Step aboard the pride of Queen Victoria’s Navy, and fall back in time to the age of steam onboard HMS Warrior. The very first iron-hulled warship, HMS Warrior acted as a deterrent to Britain’s enemies, and 200 years later she’s still a feat of engineering and an iconic part of Portsmouth’s skyline.

Visitors to HMS Warrior can explore the different areas of the ship, from the spacious wardroom where officers ate and discussed tactics, to the engine room where the air would’ve been thick with soot and sweat.

Mooch around the Historic Naval Dockyard in #Portsmouth today. Last time I went on board Warrior I was about 8 and my photos would have only been black £”& white! 😂

Imagine the sounds, sights and smells on this with 700+ other souls 170 odd years ago!
