After a 5 day no-show I was chuffed to bits to successfully root this little smasher out of the c20 km of coastline it's been frequenting since October. Initially bobbing about in the surf it swam in to the stream mouth for a good preen before flying off west. #HarlequinDuck #Donegal #IrishBirding

A harlequin duck stands in profile upon low, sharp weathered bit of bedrock patched, with bits of green lichen, sloping into the cold water of Puget Sound near Deception Pass. Their wing is dominated by a large red patch, surrounded by a base of blue-gray feathers. Left of the patch is a small spot of metallic blue, with a fleck of white above and below. Above and right of the patch, around their neck, and on their face and cheek there are stripes of white banded on the sides by black feathers. The very top of their head is adorned by a thin streak of red, surrounded by purple feathers. A white spot sits near their temple, between a black-banded white streak and their eye. Their beak is short and black bill, with a small downward hook at the very end.
Went hiking this weekend with a friend and we spotted a Harlequin duck! They're really neat!

The duck is small, with dark brow-black feathers. It has two white spots on its head above and below the eye, and a third spot on the back of the head. It's bill is black with a white tip.It's moving from right-to-left across the image, as you can tell by the wake it's leaving.

A photo of a dusk standing in a stream on top of a partially submerged rock. The duck is seen from almost directly above, and has it's head turned sideways, at an odd angle, to view what I am doing above it. The water around the duck is clear and mildly turbulent, with refractions disturbing detail under the water. The stone the duck stands on is wet, shiny, and a brown color. The duck is a species called a "Harlequin Duck", which has very striking colors and patterns. It's breast color is only partly visible from this downward angle, and is a rich reddish brown. Below the breast and on the rock, is one of it's webbed feet. The duck's body is pointed toward the right. It's pin tail feathers are splayed out something like the fingers on a hand, and pointed slightly toward the bottom of the image. It's wings are folded over it's back, with prominent wing tip feathers, up to it's 'shoulder' area where a bold white band crosses each grey charcoal colored wing. The duck's head is tilted sideways to look directly upwards toward the photographer above, so that it is in profile, with the top of it's head toward the bottom of the photo. The base of it's neck is visible, with another striking white band around it's neck. It's head has three more striking white marks. A long one, like a long comma shape from the back of the neck, up toward the top of the head, and another very small one after that behind the eye. And the last one dropping from the front of the eye, down to the small bill. The rest of the head is a glossy black in contrast. The bill is a charcoal grey. There is a bit of white barely visible where it goes around the front of the breast toward the top of the duck's base neck. These striking markings lend to it's namesake of a harlequin jester in a costume of stark alternating patterns.

I had seen the striking Harlequin Ducks at the ocean before, but did not know they came inland to mountain streams to breed! Such as this fellow, giving me serious #sideeye!
