A wonderful day in the Brecks, #Norfolk yesterday with Crossbills, Woodlark and displaying Goshawks in the morning and Brambling Siskins and #Hawfinches (one of our favourite birds) in the afternoon. Late winter birding in Norfolk at its best. Come and see!

Fieldwork: Why hawfinches? The chonkiest and most elusive of the UK's finches, the hawfinch is as enigmatic and mysterious as they come.

Lovely piece about Hawfinches, here, which I read initially just to find out more about the flared primary flight tips... but then learned SO much more from. #birds #Hawfinches

Still good numbers of #hawfinches (50+) in Merrow Downs' woods - in a different area of Silver Birch towards 3rd green of Guildford Golf club. At least 5 singing Firecrests, Green Woodpecker & the white rump of a Bullfinch. Plus an unexpected encounter with a very sweet Dutch lady poet! #surreywalks

First patch Chiffchaff heard today - a week early (has been 13th March for the last few years), more Hawfinches and at least 3 Firecrests (a pair and a single male). Still got one in my garden too! Long may this gorgeous weather continue ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿชถ. #surreybirds #hawfinches #signsofspring

Today I've had the best views & seen the highest numbers (70-100?) of #hawfinches since 2017/18 influx. They were EVERYWHERE, just stood beneath them listening to their gentle "tick" calls. They are stonking birds to see. Also saw a Firecrest, multiple Bullfinches & a Raven flew over. #surreyhills

First singing Firecrest of the year, two Bullfinches in plain sight and more happy customers from @rspbguildford.bsky.social (& friends), finding them a large flock of #hawfinches in the ancient Yews of Merrow Downs' woods. A splendid start to the week. #surreybirds #surreyhills

Good encounters with 20+ #hawfinches seen this morning in an area of Merrow Downs' woods: TQ0376849488. Not far from Yew Project boardwalk. V vocal flock, flitting in & out of a large oak tree. Took @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social Merlin app over 3.5 minutes to identify them though (I was testing it)!

Hawfinch numbers are growing in & around Newlands Corner (Surrey Hills) - at least 40 (50?) in a highly mobile flock around the Yew Tree boardwalk again (follow signs down from main car park). Open area opposite is where I've consistently seen them, in tops of Yews, Oaks & Silver Birch. #hawfinches

Hawfinches again today, but in a slightly different location here TQ 04128 49987 in Wild Wood near Newlands Corner (Surrey Hills AONB). A small flock of 4-5 in a dense Yew patch. A beautiful, sunny day and some warmth in the sun! Lovely. #surreybirds #hawfinches #surreyhills

"Extinct" birds found alive and well in Herefordshire TWO species of birds thought to be extinct in Herefordshire have been rediscovered in the county.

This is amazing! I hadn't heard of #Hawfinches or #TreeSparrows, but #Conservation is always good news!

As it's coming up to autumn and winter, I've created a feed that specifically covers #Waxwing and #Hawfinches . It picks up quite a few variant terms too such as #HawfinchesUk #UKHawfinches

#Hawfinches at Great Tew again this winter are a real delight - always wary but finding food in the Yew and Holly trees around the churchyard. Might these be coming from Wychwood Forest? @wychwood_ftrust

No fungi to be found today at St Andrew and St Patrick Church, Elveden, but the first Snowdrops in bloom, and even better, a flock of Hawfinches, including in the trees depicted.
