ooo, plant a few willows and hazels, then you can weave them as they grow #hedgelaying
🌳 🦔Fun fact: Did you know Britain's hedgerows stretch over 700,000km? This is 1.5 times the distance to the moon!🌿 🌲
Recently we hosted our very first Hedgelaying workshop for our Community Garden Network.

#Hedgelaying at Stanford Reservoir (Severn Trent). Brash will be chipped and used on the path which is currently VERY muddy . Father and son contractors are local. A great use of our permit money :-).
🌳 🦔First session of our Hedgelaying training today 🌿 🌲
Hedgelaying improves hedgerows, helping them become vital wildlife corridors and improving the health and resilience of growing spaces.

Revisited a countryside craft I learnt through BTCV 38 years ago. Not perfect, but I hope my newly-laid hedge will thrive and provide a habitat for nesting birds. #hedgelaying
At least the trees break because we want them too. Unlike the scooter we use. On Christmas Eve for the second time this week haha. Nothing like a new hedge to confuse Americans even more on our dodgy back roads 😂 #hedgelaying #workingdog #podenco #poodle #estrella #lurcher #mutt #devon #chainsaw
Laying hedges is an important part of their management cycle. To learn more about hedgerow management, check out the leaflets on our website here: https://loom.ly/32Up6AM

A blog post I wrote about #hedgelaying a couple of years ago: nathannelson.co.uk/2023/03/devo...
Have not been able to do any #HedgeLaying for some time because of hip problems, so good to be out again. Near Modbury, #Devon this weekend. The sun shone. Thanks to @chris.parkes.photo for the pic. I'm in the background with hair getting in my eyes.
I would love to go watch this: www.countypress.co.uk/news/2551619... #folkcraft #folkloring #folklore #ruralcraft #hedgelaying #isleofwight
Checked on the hedge I laid in January this year and it looks pretty good! 😀 It was very sparse & happy but now is bushy. #hedgelaying #conservation @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social
Looking down length of laid hedge towards a Black Poplar tree. The hedge has plentiful new green leaves and buds. The bare soil of the path a made when laying it runs down the left of the hedge.
Looking down length of laid hedge towards some Silver Birch trees. The hedge has plentiful fresh green leaves and buds. The bare soil of the path a made when laying it runs down the right of the hedge.
Really pleased with how well the laid hedge is doing. I wasn't expecting so much growth from the pleachers so quickly. Lots of growth from the base too.

At the end of National Hedgerow Week, let’s look at this winter’s hard work, and how it’s shaping up with the coming of spring. #hedgelaying
Closeup of Goat Willow stump coppiced during hedge laying. You can see multiple shoots coming from the base of the stump and the trimmed offshoots.
More coppiced Goat Willow sprouting and also the bases of some laid hedge plants shooting.
One of the hawthorn plants with a profusion of shoots below the point where the trunk was laid.
Multiple fresh shoots on two laid plants both below and above the point where they were laid.
Close up views of the bases of some of the laid hedge plants showing new shoots appearing.
@aninewforest.bsky.social - One of these is the coppiced Goat Willow you asked about.

The furthest end of the laid hedge, just before the footpath gate with the last part of the hedge resting on the wooden rail which separates the two parts of the hedge from the ancient footpath (well, at least a few hundred years, going by maps).
A section of the laid hedge showing mostly hawthorn but sprouting all along the length of the approximately 30 degree angled stems.

Photos taken three days ago and the hedge is looking pretty good!

The hedge I laid in February is now greening up nicely. These photos were taken 30 minutes ago. I'll post a few more detail photo taken three days ago shortly.

The brash from hedge laying spread out evenly over a wide area of rather soggy field.
Spread out brash with clear path running down length of hedge.
Almost finished spreading out the brash to discourage birds nesting before I can cut out firewood and anything for dead hedging or habitat, then shred the rest. Much as I always loved bonfires I can no longer bear to waste the carbon or pollute the air.
#HedgeLaying
Piles of brash on the ground, this side of a sheep fence. On the other side of the fence is the hedge I laid. Some larger pieces of wood are also lying on the grass.
I'm going to have to be quick spreading this brash out, as I saw a Wren investigating one of these piles while I was working!
#HedgeLaying
Drone photo looking down on laid hedge and brash in field. Some of the brash is still in dense piles whereas other parts are spread out thinly across the grass.
I've just started the task of creating a clear path on the field side of the laid hedge, so I can finish it off. Moving the brash and spreading it out thinly, to deter birds from nesting there until I can get my shredder on the soggy field.

Drone photo looking down on laid hedge, with brash scattered in adjacent field.
Finally finished first hedge. Unfortunately probably too late to do second hedge this year, due to sapp rising and possibility of nesting birds.
