From a distance, and out of the corner of my eye, this really did look like a real person. Gilbert White ( 1720-1793)was a naturalist and ecology pioneer.
Walking round Gilbert White’s House I caught a glimpse of a member of staff in a corner of the room, this is usual in historic houses. When I was nearer I found it was a waxwork model.

Have you visited Kiplin Hall & Gardens? 🏛️🌱
It’s such a diverse site—you can go from 17th-century history to a wild wetland boardwalk and lakeside bird hides in minutes.

Unfortunately I was distracted and did not read or take a photo of the explanation next to this. I later found out that the house was both a dual museum about Gilbert White and also the Oates family. There was an exhibition upstairs related to Lawrence Oates and Captain Scott’s Antarctic expedition in 1910 to 1912 and to Frank Oates (1840-1875) explorations in Africa and Central America.

Definitely not what I expected to see in this Hampshire (England) parson and naturalist’s home.

This is another addition to Abigail’s wonderful series of historic houses throughout New England. Somewhat special in that it hasn’t been completely restored and you can see early construction techniques.

This is my favourite room in Petworth House apart from the cafe.☕️ It’s a large room and all the walls are carved with wood carvings mainly by Grinling Gibbons and a few other carvers in the 17C. There are also amazing art masterpieces in the room including paintings by Turner of the grounds at Petworth. A large table and chairs can be seen in the mirror, also busts, candlesticks. and a few of the paintings. There is a marble table under the mirror with a small sculpture. On each side of my photo are red velvet curtains.

In the early 20th Century the owner Mrs Greville used the house for entertaining guests including royalty. The whole house is luxuriously decorated apart from the servants quarters! The gold leaf decor in this room is illuminated by the carefully maintained lighting.

A view of the house from across the lake. This part of the grounds was landscaped by Capability Brown. Geese are on the grass in the foreground by the lake. The land gently sweeps up to a hill on the left covered with ancient oaks. In the distance the house has room after room of paintings by famous artists, sculptures and beautiful decor. The sky in my photo is covered with interesting cloud formations.
After a woodland walk from the house you come across this vista of a wide grass path lined with trees leading to the Ionic Rotunda.
There are also attractive flower borders leading from the main car park entrance to the house and former servants’ quarters.
On the other side of the hill near the lake is the Deer Park with ponds, water birds, deer and more ancient trees.
I am posting 4 photos in different parts of the grounds of Petworth House to try to show the size and variety of landscapes.
