A lovely blue bird is perched on the top branch of an apple tree in bloom. This is the Indigo Bunting, a species sometimes nicknamed "blue canaries," because these birds sing from dawn to dusk, often atop the tallest perch they can find. These favored singing sites are maintained throughout the breeding season and often from year to year, so a birder intent on capturing Indigo Bunting songs can listen for the birds singing from the same perch for many years.

A brilliant blue bird is sitting on a branch, posing against a vibrant green background of leaves. This is a male Indigo Bunting. Actually, the brilliant azure blue of male Indigo Buntings in breeding plumage is an illusion. Those lovely feathers aren’t really blue, but appear so in bright light because of microscopic structures in the bird’s feathers that reflect blue light. This bird appears to be a vivid turquoise blue because he is singing in the bright sunlight filtering through the branches.

A dazzlingly blue bird sits on a branch in summer. It’s a male Indigo Bunting. Actually this bird isn’t really blue. Indigo Buntings appear to be vivid blue or even turquoise in bright light, but their feathers aren’t really blue. They only appear blue because of the way the bird’s feathers are structured. Microscopic structures in the feathers reflect blue light, with the colors we see shifting from black to blue to turquoise as the angle of reflected light changes.
