Many thanks to @lucatrenta.bsky.social for the great questions and being a wonderful host for an NBN interview about my book that takes a broad look at the far-flung American #intelligence efforts during World War I. #FWW #intelhist #milhist
It was a pleasure to review Jeffrey Rogg's book "The Spy and the State: The History of American Intelligence" for @lawfaremedia.org. There is much in it to chew on and debate and the topic, civil-intelligence relations, is of great and growing importance. #intelligence #intelhist
This looks really good. Excited to read it. #intelhist #ColdWar #milhist
Heaven forbid the NSA museum should honor NSA trailblazers some of whom were women or minorities. What has happened at the National Cryptologic Museum is disgraceful. That said, I probably should have expected it. #intelhist
That piece led me to a fascinating bit of video of an interview with Guy Burgess that I'd never known existed. There is so much going on in this interview. #intelhist
Those are my redactions, by the way, just to focus attention on the key bit. #intelhist #CIA #intelligence
The cover of Steve R. Ward's book, "Iran's Ministry of Intelligence: A Concise History."
Here's the cover, as that link didn't give it.

Very cool! In a previous life I worked for a year for a guy who was in OSS X-2. After the war, he went (back to?) Harvard to finish is degree and then got a Ph.D. in Romance languages. Not a historian, though. Went on to a 50-ish year career at CIA. #intelhist
#SpyGems: #CisarskeLazne bldg @KarlovyVaryCZ a.k.a. #CasinoRoyale where, in 1 night, #Bond loses all HMG allowance in poker, takes #CIA loan, kills 2 assassins, survives poisoning attempt &tries to save kidnapped sidekick. All while thinking he is in Montenegro. What a night! #intelhist #skystorians

Great chatting to Erin O'Brien about my @warontherocks.bsky.social piece on #Soviet #sabotage #doctrine & what Czech security and intelligence archives can tell us about the #ColdWar:

I’m delighted that King’s Centre for the Study of Intelligence has joined Bluesky! They’ve also provided a really useful list of many of the intelligence historians who have accounts here. Give them all a follow! #intelhist #milhist #skystorians
"Thanks to...discoveries in the Czech Security Service Archive, we are now able to reconstruct the doctrine that informed the Soviet Bloc’s way of sabotage...and draw parallels with the...suspected sabotage attacks...in Europe and the US since the Russian invasion of Ukraine." #intelhist

This sounds like an interesting new book on Canadian #intelligence history. A review of Dennis Gruending's "A Communist for the RCMP: The Uncovered Story of a Social Movement Informant." Not a lot gets published on Canadian intel history so I'm glad to see this.

But I knew that scientific policing was coming along in that same period and might have contributed, as well. I'm trying to see if these are the same or distinct inputs into the development of domestic surveillance. 2/2 #intelhist

Upcoming conference: "Knock in the Night: Intelligence, Security and Special Services in Authoritarian States." The conference is put on by the Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies and it runs online June 26 and 27. (Nb: all times are UK time.)

I've been doing research on memoirs of American #intelligence veterans of #WWI. One thing I've noticed is that though there was a vast domestic intel/surveillance effort during the war almost nobody wrote memoirs about it. I think this tells us something.

The Intelligence Studies Bibliography. An *outstanding* resource listing books, articles, podcasts, conferences, etc. Includes #intelhist. It's the work of Yusuf Ali Ozkan of Imperial College London and King's College London who, sadly, is not on Bluesky.
