Many thanks to @lucatrenta.bsky.social for the great questions and being a wonderful host for an NBN interview about my book that takes a broad look at the far-flung American #intelligence efforts during World War I. #FWW #intelhist #milhist

U.S. Intelligence Agencies Have Not Aged Well A review of Jeffrey P. Rogg, “The Spy and the State: The History of American Intelligence” (Oxford University Press, 2025).

It was a pleasure to review Jeffrey Rogg's book "The Spy and the State: The History of American Intelligence" for @lawfaremedia.org. There is much in it to chew on and debate and the topic, civil-intelligence relations, is of great and growing importance. #intelligence #intelhist

Heaven forbid the NSA museum should honor NSA trailblazers some of whom were women or minorities. What has happened at the National Cryptologic Museum is disgraceful. That said, I probably should have expected it. #intelhist

That piece led me to a fascinating bit of video of an interview with Guy Burgess that I'd never known existed. There is so much going on in this interview. #intelhist

Very cool! In a previous life I worked for a year for a guy who was in OSS X-2. After the war, he went (back to?) Harvard to finish is degree and then got a Ph.D. in Romance languages. Not a historian, though. Went on to a 50-ish year career at CIA. #intelhist

I’m delighted that King’s Centre for the Study of Intelligence has joined Bluesky! They’ve also provided a really useful list of many of the intelligence historians who have accounts here. Give them all a follow! #intelhist #milhist #skystorians

This sounds like an interesting new book on Canadian #intelligence history. A review of Dennis Gruending's "A Communist for the RCMP: The Uncovered Story of a Social Movement Informant." Not a lot gets published on Canadian intel history so I'm glad to see this.

I've been doing research on memoirs of American #intelligence veterans of #WWI. One thing I've noticed is that though there was a vast domestic intel/surveillance effort during the war almost nobody wrote memoirs about it. I think this tells us something.
