It had been a disappointing day: just the usual daily birds. Robins, sparrows, pigeons, cardinals, blue jays. Then I heard a ruckus just in front of me: there, on the ground, was a juvenile red-tailed hawk. It had apparently tried to grab a squirrel, which was up a nearby tree emitting a buzzy sound that sounded highly stressed.

For several years, red-tailed hawks had messed with me, flying off when I pointed my camera at them, or flying close by knowing full well that my battery was about to die. At last, in recent years, they relented and became more cooperative. This one hung around for quite a while, hopping to different perches. I must have taken a thousand photos. This is one.

A rather grouchy looking Northern Cardinal and some ring-billed gulls at Inwood Hill Park today. The “gray feathers on back, brown feathers on wings” bird is a first winter gull.

"Seriously, you're using that camera and that lens? You should get yourself a Canon R5. It has animal eye focus. And get a better lens!"

"Good idea. Maybe you'd care to buy that for me?"

"Brilliant! Maybe B&H Photo will accept pigeon and rat remains for payment."

"Ah, you're nuts."

"I'm nuts? You're the one having an imaginary conversation with a bird!"

I feel that I should, every so often, post *something* that will help counteract the impression that I am a bot, churning out othing but Mamdani posts.
So here is an abandoned trampoline, which seems to have weathered a rainstorm or two, leaning against a tree in […]

It had been a disappointing day. Two hours or more, and no birds other than the common ones. Ahead of me, I heard noises. And there, maybe 10 feet away, was this juvenile red-tailed hawk. A very stressed squirrel trembled on a tree trunk a bit further away. Evidently, the hawk had tried to grab the squirrel and missed. It took little notice of me, although, as you can see, it gave me an occasional look. An adult hawk of any species would never let a human get this close. I fired away for nearly half an hour, even when the hawk flew off to another tree. I was able to follow it. It turned out to be a great day.

There was another small fire on the hill when I took this shot -- so the air smelled like wood smoke. I guess it is reassuring that the birds have not given up on the park as an urban respite for wildlife.

Map of upper Manhattan from 175th Street all the way north, with a line wandering from 181st St north through Fort Tryon Park and then twisting back and forth and around through the arduous hills of Inwood Hill Park, then all the way to the 1 train at Dyckman which was not running so all the way back along Thayer St to the A train at Dyckman. Whew!

A semi-secret path down the side of a hill in Inwood Hill Park, lined with an old stone wall. Visible through the trees in the distance is a blue apartment tower which is actually in Marble Hill on the north (far) side of Spuyten Duyvil Creek.
