It had been a disappointing day: just the usual daily birds. Robins, sparrows, pigeons, cardinals, blue jays. Then I heard a ruckus just in front of me: there, on the ground, was a juvenile red-tailed hawk. It had apparently tried to grab a squirrel, which was up a nearby tree emitting a buzzy sound that sounded highly stressed. For several years, red-tailed hawks had messed with me, flying off when I pointed my camera at them, or flying close by knowing full well that my battery was about to die. At last, in recent years, they relented and became more cooperative. This one hung around for quite a while, hopping to different perches. I must have taken a thousand photos. This is one.
