It had been a disappointing day: just the usual daily birds. Robins, sparrows, pigeons, cardinals, blue jays. Then I heard a ruckus just in front of me: there, on the ground, was a juvenile red-tailed hawk. It had apparently tried to grab a squirrel, which was up a nearby tree emitting a buzzy sound that sounded highly stressed.

For several years, red-tailed hawks had messed with me, flying off when I pointed my camera at them, or flying close by knowing full well that my battery was about to die. At last, in recent years, they relented and became more cooperative. This one hung around for quite a while, hopping to different perches. I must have taken a thousand photos. This is one.

This juvenile red-tailed hawk flew up and perched about 10 feet away from me! Took no notice of me, either. Signs of a juvenile: light eyes. Red-tail eyes get darker as they age. And, lack of the eponymous red tail feathers, which don't appear until around one year of age. This was taken in December, and the hawk was born in the spring.

A juvenile red-tailed hawk perches on a fire escape. Red-brick building behind.

I came out of the grocery store and saw this hawk across the street. My hands were full of grocery bags and it was too far away for my cell phone. "Don't go anywhere," I admonished the bird. Hurried back home, grabbed my camera. Remarkably, the hawk was still there.

An augur buzzard gives me a look-over. Taken in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. The crater is an extinct volcano. Because the crater is relatively cut off from the nearby land, the density of wildlife inside almost guarantees sightings. The rim of the volcano is visible in the background.

Augur buzzards are in the buteo family of hawks, so they are related to the common buzzard in Europe, and the red-tailed hawk and red-shouldered hawk in North America.

A juvenile red-tailed hawk stands perched on a stone wall in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan.

Red-tailed hawks are now common all over New York City after decades when they nearly disappeared. Despite their numbers, they eluded my camera, flying away as soon as I pointed my zoom at them, or teasing me by flying very close knowing full well that my camera battery was about to die. I swear it's true: they knew!

In more recent years, they have been more co-operative. On a chilly December day, I stood on a flag platform in the park, shooting cityscapes in the distance. As I started unscrewing my monopod, this juvenile flew up and landed about 10 feet away from me. Fearing it would fly off before I could dismount my tripod, I awkwardly hoisted my camer up with the monopod still attached and fired away until it finally flew off. This is the best photo of that batch.

How do I know it's a juvenile? The pale, yellow-green eyes. Red-tail eye get darker the older they get. The lack of the eponymous red tail feathers, which don't appear until full adulthood. And lastly, the fact that the hawk landed close to me. An adult would never land close to a human.

"Seriously, you're using that camera and that lens? You should get yourself a Canon R5. It has animal eye focus. And get a better lens!"

"Good idea. Maybe you'd care to buy that for me?"

"Brilliant! Maybe B&H Photo will accept pigeon and rat remains for payment."

"Ah, you're nuts."

"I'm nuts? You're the one having an imaginary conversation with a bird!"

This juvenile red-tailed hawk landed 10-12 feet away from me. The light eyes and lack of a red tail feather tell me it's a juvenile. This photo was taken in December, so this hawk was likely born in spring. Red-tails had proved elusive to me for many years, flying close to me just as my battery ran out or flying off before I could attach a long lens. They knew! More recently, they've been more cooperative. Another sign that this is a juvenile: an adult would never have landed 10 feet away from a human.

It had been a disappointing day. Two hours or more, and no birds other than the common ones. Ahead of me, I heard noises. And there, maybe 10 feet away, was this juvenile red-tailed hawk. A very stressed squirrel trembled on a tree trunk a bit further away. Evidently, the hawk had tried to grab the squirrel and missed. It took little notice of me, although, as you can see, it gave me an occasional look. An adult hawk of any species would never let a human get this close. I fired away for nearly half an hour, even when the hawk flew off to another tree. I was able to follow it. It turned out to be a great day.

Two red-tailed hawks perch atop St Elizabeth's church, Washington Heights, New York City. The church sits atop high ground overlooking a valley. This is a popular observation post for birds of prey. Looks like these two may have spotted their next meal.

My first video: Female & Male Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) seconds after mating. Here (MA in US) they migrate. Came back 2 weeks early last 3 years to their breeding ground here. (More info in Alt.). As most birders know, mating is quick. March 13, 2021

Overexposed a bit so as see the details, but still very nice to see my raptor neighbors flying about after the recent rains in northern California
