A modern take on traditional "mashrabiya" latticed windows. Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, Île-de-France, France. Designed by Jean Nouvel in conjunction with Architecture-Studio, 1987. There are 240 of these (in a 24 x 10 grid) in this stunning building's facade and they are all photo-sensitive, motor-controlled apertures that automatically open and close to control the amount of light entering the building. I wish the building was open when I was there, as I'd have loved to take some shots from inside (do an image search to see why). Maybe next time . . .
