Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé 2010, Bordeaux, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim. Fruity nose and medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity and mouthfeel. Showing black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, chocolates, toast, licorice, spices, earth, tobacco and herbs. Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious Merlot based blend from Bordeaux. Rich and extracted. Nicely balanced and complex. This 16 year old is starting to drink at its peak now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Wine Advocate 96 points. Wine Spectator 96 points. I've had the 2012 a few years ago, but this 2010 vintage is showing so much better. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly, so be patient. Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. A blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 17 months in French Oak barrels. Unfiltered and unfined. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $180.

Chateau de la Gardine Cuvée de Generations Gaston Phillipe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2012, Rhône, France #AgedWineTuesday. Dark ruby in color with a reddish/ brick rim. Pretty nose of red and black fruits with cedar, licorice and chocolate notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with sweet raspberries, cherries, plums, light cedar, earth, herbs, chocolates, black pepper and tobacco leaf. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious 14 year old GSM blend from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Rich, but not extracted. Elegant with lots of chocolate notes. Well balanced with nice complexity. Impressively fresh and youthful for its age, with good structure and balance. The high alcohol is well integrated by now. I've had a few vintages of this wine and it is very consistent. Drinking at its peak, and will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. A gorgeous wine to drink by itself or with food. A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre. Grapes from very old vines are aged in new French oak barrels for 14 months. 15% alcohol by volume. 93 points. $100.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity. Showing red currants, cherries, earth, black coffee, light oak, spices, herbs and black tea. Medium plus on the finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Pinot Noir from Oregon. Elegant and nicely balanced with a soft mouthfeel. This Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is complex, spicy and entertaining. Wine Enthusiasts 92 points. Wine Spectator 88 points. Still young and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly, and will continue to age nicely in the next 7 to 10 years. A little longer for this Magnum. Good by itself as a sipping wine. 100% Pinot Noir grapes were grown on volcanic soils from 25 year old vines. Drunk from a Magnum. 13% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $85 (750ml).
