A brochure with a picture of a young, white woman and man in matching white cable sweaters. Both also have dark turtle necks under the sweater. Hers is a V-neck pullover and his is a V-neck cardigan Dated 1950s. The writing reads. "Mary Maxim, No 6-A, Irish Twist Pattern, 100% Pure Wool or 100% Orlon"
This 1950s Mary Maxim his/hers can be knit in either 100%wool or 100% Orlon. I am fascinated with these yarn company patterns from the period when they were making the transition from wool to synthetics. They still make the acrylic yarn this calls for. #knitting #knittinghistory 🧶
A page from "The Art of Knitting" with text and illustrations showing hands holding knitting needles and yarn and illustrations showing how a stitch looks when worked.
Deep in an 19th century yarn company knitting book, and the level of detail in the illustrations is amazing. Book is The Butterick Art of Knitting (1892) #oldbooks #knitting #knittinghistory 🧶

?? for the #knittinghistory folks. I've found a pattern pamphlet (1954) by Nell Armstrong of Doreen Knitting Books of Lowell, MA. Nell and the company were prolific mid-century publishers, not a yarn brand. Can anyone tell me anything about Nell and/or the company? #knitting
Soon I will be attending a webb seminar on traditional knitting in Halland, a county in the southwest of Sweden.

Both photos show me wearing a fair isle vest top in oatmeal with green, yellow, and orange traditional patterning, on top of a white long sleeved linen shirt. I'm seated but you can just see my blue jeans. I have long light coloured wavy hair and glasses and I'm sitting in a cafe.
Wearing my granddad's vest top that my granny knit for him about 70 years ago. It's so pretty and I can't believe it fits! #knitting #knittersOfBlueSky #fairIsleKnitting #knittingHistory
A 1956 knitting pattern book from Bernat yarn. Two young white women lean on a stone wall holding books and looking at each other.

☕️I was up at 3am to attend the Knitting History Forum, which was, as always enriching, and intriguing. Each presentation was fascinating, but the last, on The Girl in the Green Sweater literally had me in tears. What a story.

We have Tudor knitters who use these. They allow you to knit and walk more easily, and #earlymodern women had a lot of walking to do. #knittinghistory
