Mallard mom was able to take an extended break from incubating her eggs to feed and bathe 🧘🏾. Freezing temperatures are done for us.

I don’t see many killdeer so I was surprised to see this little guy hanging around the pond.

Limpkin, stepping through shallow water, searching along the shoreline for a tasty snack. Medium bodied, brown bird with white splotches throughout.

Great Blue Heron at lake's edge. Keeping a sharp eye (and sharper bill) for a tasty snack. Tall wader, blue grey in color, very long neck. Amongst full, wide green leaves and long reeds growing a waters edge.

Ibis, in sharp focus and strong light, center of picture. Flock- mate slightly out of focus further back. Standing on a green grass shoreline area of a small lake. Smaller bird than the big waders, all white body, reddish legs and long curved beak.

Immature Purple Gallinule, standing just in the edge of a lake. This teenager is light brown now, the great dark iridescent coloration will come on as maturity brings changes.

The numbers in the gentoo colonies would swell in the evenings as both parents returned home to spend the night on land. The journey was fraught with danger as a Sea Lion or Elephant seal might take advantage of the large numbers of birds returning to the beach and patrol the bays. The penguins would swim by porpoising from a long way out perhaps to get a better view of the best way in/any predators and then from about 1-200 m would disappear from view suddenly popping out of the surf as they hit the shore line, hurry up the beach a couple of metres and then stop and rest / preen before heading up and back to the colony. Standing on the beach you could hear the calls of the other birds in the colonies up to half a mile away. Photo of a beach on SeaLion Island where the water hits the sand. 7 Gentoo Penguins have just emerged from the surf, 5 on their bellies having thrown themselves up the beach from their swimming position and 2, having straightened up slightly earlier, jumping the transition from water to land.
