I hope the exit is joyful and hope never to come back. Not that I lack backbone (though at times I’ve wished I did); not that I regret, renege, recant. I’d not undo a jot of what I’ve done — if only I’d done more of it, in fact. I’ve stood on my two feet, as long as I had feet to stand on, and I’ve taken all the tortures in life’s dungeon, then gone back for more. I’ve offered beauty in the face of ugliness, and truth when lies are all around. I’d keep on going if I could, but now the choice is taken from me; all I have’s the power to choose how I should leave. I still say “long live life”, but now not “long live me”.

It’s gone on too long. Push me over the edge. No, I’m not a fighter, I’m not clinging on to life in brave defiance of inevitable death. I’m hanging on, yes, like a button longing for the thread to snap — useless as a fastener yet dangling in hopelessness and pain that shouldn’t have to be endured. I’m blindly teetering upon the lip of being: which side is solid land and which the welcome void?
