I've been seeking out a tiny lichen called Arctomia - it has beautiful deep red apothecia and is one of the many denizens of lush mini-jungles that form in the canopy of liverwort mats on tree trunks in danker woodlands in these parts.

Scapania compacta has leaf lobes that are a similar size, facing in similar orientations. This gives it a flatter, more regular look compared to other, more three-dimensional species.

Despite being full of rain here, this is a Scapania species found in relatively drier areas. It was very common across a slate covered, gravelly riverside in the Lake District due to the free-draining nature of the substrate.
