A humpback whale's fluke submerges into the calm waters off of Lagoon Island, Antarctica. The chiselled, snow-capped landscape spans the back of the frame. There's a research station on the left side on the black rocks.

This is a humpback a true whale as it is vegan. Willy was an Orca, a member of the dolphin family which are carnivorous. They hunt humpbacks.

Two Skua, one perched on what appears to be their favourite rock as a few more skua are out of the frame. The other in what appears to be attack mode. The rock has a jagged profile and patches of snow on it. The sky is clear and blue.

Brown / Antarctic Skua (Stercorarius antarcticus) are the heaviest species of skua, rivaling the largest gulls. They are aggressive, often taking on much larger birds, eating their eggs and chicks during the breeding season, and stealing food from them.

Drifting along in a Zodiac with a napping Humpback Whale at our side. It's about 4 meters away, enough to catch a drift of the lunch menu. Ahead lies the chiselled landscape of Lagoon Island, a small island that sits in the entrance to Ryder Bay off of the SE side of Adelaide Island. It is covered in snow and sits under clouds. The water is calm, the whale is calm, Nature is amazing!

If you've walked on this special part of the world you'll have Penguin Memories for life. For one, they're a little stinky. They're also awkward on land, but in water they immediately transform into sleek, graceful torpedoes. These young Adélie penguins, identifiable by the distinctive white ring around their eyes. They are standing on a rocky, snow-dusted shore. The curiosity is mutual.

Antarctica Day, December 1, commemorates the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959. The treaty sets forth strict guidelines to protect the very important ecosystem of the Antarctic Continent. Today, China and Norway routinely ignore the treaty, scooping up tons, upon tons of Krill. Krill is the building block of pretty much the entire food chain, shrimp and other crustations depend on it, as do penguins and whales.

The landscape sits under blue skies, with moving clouds that transition from white to grey. Cuverville is home to the peninsula’s largest population of Gentoo penguins, about 4,500 nesting pairs.
